Arrest made in gang shooting

POSTED December 4, 2010 12:16 a.m.

A Modesto man suspected of taking part in a brazen daytime gang shooting was apprehended Wednesday by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.

Juan Carlos Mendoza, 23, was booked into Stanislaus County Jail on charges of attempted homicide and criminal street gang activity. Mendoza’s arrest stems from a shooting that occurred in a south Modesto neighborhood on Tuesday.

Around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday the Modesto police and sheriff’s department were dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of Glenn Avenue for several reports of shots fired.

The shooting had stopped by the time law enforcement arrived, but they did find a male juvenile with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

It was unclear what the victim’s role was during the shoot-out, but he is a self-admitted Norteno gang member, according to the sheriff’s department.

The neighborhood has been witness to several acts of violence due to gang rivalry between Modesto area Nortenos and Surenos, the sheriff’s department reported.

On Wednesday, sheriff’s SWAT executed a search warrant at 808 Glenn Ave., which eventually led to the arrest of Mendoza.  He was arrested during a vehicle stop as he was seen leaving the residence just prior to SWAT’s arrival, said sheriff spokesman Deputy Luke Schwartz. Patrol deputies were able to safely take Mendoza into custody at that time.

The case is still open and the investigation continues, both in terms of who was involved in the shooting, and precisely what specific gang affiliations all of the involved parties may or may not have, Schwartz said.

Detectives have identified a second suspect and are in the process of identifying a third. Neither name has been released.

Anybody with further information regarding this incident is urged to contact Detective Tom Letras at 567-4481. Callers can remain anonymous and call Stanislaus County Area Crime Stoppers toll free at 1-866-602-7463 or locally at 521-4636.
