Sheriff’s detectives search for clues in Modesto killing

POSTED December 21, 2010 10:38 p.m.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the homicide death of a 61-year-old Modesto man.

The victim was identified by the sheriff’s department as Manuel Romero Vibanco.

Deputies and emergency medical technicians responded to the Global Auto Body Parts located in the 500 block of South 9th Street in Modesto at 5:32 p.m. Monday. Callers reported that a person had been assaulted with a deadly weapon and when deputies arrived they found Vibanco seriously injured at the side of the roadway. Paramedics rushed him to a local area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Deputy Luke Schwartz, a sheriff spokesman, said the investigators have determined a cause of death, but are not releasing the details because the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information to help further this investigation, or who may have come into contact with Vibanco in the days leading up to his death, is urged to contact Det. Frank Soria.  He can be reached at 525-7080.  Those that wish to remain anonymous may call Stanislaus County Area Crime Stoppers toll free at 1-866-602-7463 or locally at 521-4636.
