Warriors’ Gowan earns conference honor

POSTED January 4, 2011 10:16 p.m.

After leading her team to a two-game road sweep in Southern California last week, Cal State Stanislaus guard Christin Gowan became the California Collegiate Athletic Association women’s basketball Player of the Week for the effort, it was announced Monday.

The senior from Manteca’s East Union High had a pair of impressive outings in leading the Warriors to wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. She averaged 17 points, 4 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.5 steals, in addition to going 17-for-18 from the foul line.

In Thursday’s 79-53 victory over Dominguez Hills, the Stanislaus guard scored 17 points, collected a team-high six rebounds, dished out four assists and had two steals in 30 minutes of action. She also was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. Gowan nearly matched that effort on the following day against Cal State L.A., as she tallied 17 points while finishing two rebounds, five steals and five assists, with the numbers being more than enough to help the Warriors continue their lift beyond a .500 record.

Gowan became the first Warrior this season to earn the weekly honor.

Stanislaus (6-4 overall, 4-2 CCAA) will continue conference play this weekend, as the Warriors will host Cal State East Bay and UC San Diego on Friday and Saturday afternoons, respectively. Both games will tip off at 5 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Arena on the Stanislaus campus.
