Mayor John Lazar speaks with students at Turlock Junior High School.

POSTED January 11, 2011 11:13 p.m.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, mayors from across the country are challenging youth to get involved in their communities. The speech JFK made on that day is still famous for the line “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”

On Tuesday, Turlock Mayor John Lazar challenged eighth grade students at Dutcher Middle School and Turlock Junior High School to volunteer in Turlock.

“We are never too old or too young for public service,” Lazar said.

Dave Kline, principal at TJHS, said that many of his students already participate in Builders Club, a philanthropic club on campus.

“I really want the kids to know that they are connected to our community,” Kline said.
