One killed in Hilmar collision

POSTED August 7, 2009 11:05 p.m.
A fatal accident in Hilmar involving a big rig and a pickup truck claimed the life of a Ceres man on Tuesday.
The Merced County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Raul Carrillo, 38, of Ceres.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Carillo’s vehicle was struck by a big rig after he failed to stop at a posted stop sign.
The accident occurred just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Faith Home Road and Williams Avenue.
Carrillo was driving a 1996 Nissan pickup truck southbound on Faith Home road at an undetermined speed.
The big rig, with trailer attached, was headed westbound on Williams Avenue at about 45 mph, the CHP reported.
The intersection at Faith Home and Williams is not a four way stop. Only traffic on Faith Home have posted stop signs.
For an unknown reason, Carrillo failed to stop at a posted sign and drove into the intersection just as the big rig was approaching.
The big rig struck the driver’s side of the Nissan, crumpling the pickup.
Carrillo sustained fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the coroner’s office.
A 49-year-old Atwater man was driving the big rig. He was not injured in the crash.
The accident remains under investigation and the CHP has not made a determination yet if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.
