POSTED January 21, 2011 9:46 p.m.

The Modesto Police Department is investigating a shooting that claimed the life of one man and forced the temporary lockdown of a nearby elementary school Friday morning.

Around 11:30 a.m. officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Monterey Avenue for several reports of shots fired. When officers arrived they found the victim laying in the front yard of a residence with a single gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s name and hometown have not been released pending notification of next of kin. He is a male in his late teens to early 20s, said Modesto Police spokesman Sgt. Rick Armendariz.

A dark colored passenger type vehicle occupied by several subjects was reported to have left the scene after the shooting.  Investigators are trying to determine if there is any connection between the vehicle and the shooting.  Orville Wright Elementary School, which is located just over 100 yards from the scene of the shooting, was temporarily placed on lockdown by the school administrator.  Once the officers arrived and assured the scene was secured, the school lifted the lockdown, Armendariz said.
