Stanislaus women snap 4-game skid

POSTED January 25, 2011 9:03 p.m.

A day after succumbing to its fourth consecutive loss, the Cal State Stanislaus women’s basketball team recovered by holding off San Francisco State for a 56-50 win on Saturday night at Fitzpatrick Arena, thanks in part to a career night from guard Theresa Henderson.

The 5-foot-10 junior transfer from Taft College finished with 17 points to lead the struggling Warriors, who won for the first in five tries to improve to 8-8 overall and 6-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Henderson scored nine of her points in the first half, in which she was 4-for-7 from the field while the rest of the team went 8-for-20.

“She played well offensively,” Warriors coach Sharon Turner said of Henderson. “We know she has the physical skills and is just adjusting to playing at this level.”

Jeanette Rowe chipped in 11 points, including going 3-for-3 with two 3-pointers in the first half, and grabbed six rebounds. And Katie Busi, who was limited offensively for most of the night, finished with 10 points and eight rebounds and a career-best seven blocked shots.

San Francisco State, now 1-15 overall and 1-11 in the CCAA, was led by Dominique Hunter, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Gators took early control of the game and did not let up until a three-pointer by Rowe at 2:10 left in the first half that gave the Warriors their first lead at 23-21.

After enduring eight ties, the Warriors finally took over after a layup by Busi with 3:28 left in the game for a 49-48 lead.

Stanislaus then held the Gators to just two points.

"We will obviously take the win,” Turner said. “One of the good things is that we show some resilience and came back. Our players themselves were upset of how poor we were playing.”

The Warriors will finish the second half of their current four-game homestand this weekend, starting with Friday’s game against Cal State L.A. at 5:30 p.m. Stanislaus will then host Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday at the same time.
