Drive-by injures one

POSTED August 7, 2009 11:16 p.m.
A teenager was wounded in a suspected drive-by shooting by gang members in Planada on Sunday.
The 16-year-old Latino boy was hit once in the neck from the shooting. The victim was air lifted to a Modesto hospital where he is expected to recover from his injuries, according to Merced County Sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Tom MacKenzie.
The shooting took place just after 9 p.m. Sunday in the 9000 block of Broadway Avenue.
According to the sheriff’s department, the victim and a friend were walking out of the house on Broadway, when they noticed a car slowing as it approached them. They both turned and were heading back to the house when someone in the vehicle opened fire, MacKenzie said.
Multiple gunshots were fired and one bullet struck the 16-year-old in the neck. He collapsed on the ground outside the house as the car sped off.
Witnesses and the victim are being uncooperative with law enforcement in what is believed by investigators to be a gang drive-by shooting, MacKenzie said. It is unknown at this time what caliber of gun was used in the shooting and how many suspects were in the vehicle.
The vehicle was described as a silver or grey Honda Accord.
