Warriors take solid position in conference after win

POSTED February 1, 2011 11:21 p.m.

Christin Gowan equaled her career-high and the Cal State Stanislaus women’s basketball team held off visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills in a 62-56 win Saturday night at Fitzpatrick Arena to move the Warriors into sole possession of sixth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings.

The top eight teams will qualify for the conference’s postseason tournament in early March.
After exploding for 17 points in the first half, Gowan finished with 24 points to help the Warriors improve to 10-8 overall and 8-6 in the CCAA. Katie Busi was held down in the first half, but managed to come back in the second half for her 32nd career double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds).

Busi’s effort against the Toros, along with her season-high 28-point performance in a 96-73 win over Cal State L.A. the previous night, helped her earn the conference’s Player of the Week honors.

On Saturday night, Gowan was the most productive.

“Christin was huge for us, scoring in variety of ways," Warriors coach Sharon Turner said. “She stepped it up ways seniors are supposed to do.”

Gowan was 5 of 8 from the field, 2-for-5 behind the 3-point line and nailed five of six free throws for 17 first-half points. Gowan — along and Rosa Tirado’s eight points from 3-for-3 shooting — gave the Warriors a 36-31 halftime lead.
The Warriors will look to maintain their good CCAA standing on the road, as they finish off the regular season with six of their last eight games away from home. They begin this process on Thursday, when Stanislaus plays at Humboldt State.
