Stanislaus caps off tourney with victories

POSTED February 9, 2011 12:12 a.m.

Two great pitching performances and solid defense resulted in the Cal State Stanislaus softball team going 2-0 at the Mizuno Best of West Invitational on Sunday, the final day of the two-day tournament at Pedretti Park.

Freshman pitcher Kristan Burns pitched a gem in her second start of her career as the Warriors easily defeated Dominican with an 11-1 win in five innings in the first game on Sunday.

Not to be outdone, Warrior ace Brittani Weatherford recorded a great outing herself in the tournament finale as Stanislaus beat conference foe Chico State 2-1 to finish 2-0 on the day and 3-2 for a successful weekend.

On Saturday, the Warriors went 1-2 with a 4-3 win over San Francisco State.

“I am just so proud of them,” Stanislaus coach Jan Schefkowitz said. “We have gotten better with every game this weekend. Today we played with confidence in every position, offensively and defensively. We stuck together as a team and we look forward to a good season.”

Burns, who made a solid debut on Saturday with a complete game victory over San Francisco State, was one out away from a five-inning perfect game against the Penguins. Meanwhile, her teammates scored at will in the eight-run ruled game.

Cal State Stanislaus needed just eight hits — including doubles by Brittney Rickles and Nicole Jenkins — and capitalized on six Dominican errors to score all of those runs. The Warriors scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the 10-run rule into effect.

Sarah Locarnini, Alyssa Coehlo, Burns and Rickles each drove in two runs to lead the Warriors offense.

For her weekend efforts that included three runs scored, a double, three walks, six stolen bases and a .588 batting average, while recording a .619 on-base and .647 slugging percentage, Locarnini earned the California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week honors.

The Warriors will now prepare for the conference double-header opener at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at 11 a.m.
