Foster Farms seeks perfect chicken recipe

Foster Farms is looking for the best thing since boneless skinless chicken breasts. The Livingston-based poultry company will give $10,000 to the winner of its second annual Fresh Chicken Cooking Contest. Residents of California, Oregon and Washington are eligible to submit their best chicken recipe for the prize. The winning dish must use Foster Farms fresh chicken and will feature locally grown flavors.

“Our contest is a celebration of the West Coast bounty and all of the fresh produce we are lucky to have at your fingertips,” said Ira Brill, director of Marketing and Advertising Services for Foster Farms.

Last year’s winner, Alexandria Boswell from La Jolla, used locally grown spinach leaves to stuff boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Contestants can use any fresh Foster Farms chicken product. Recipes should include fresh local ingredients, and scores will be weighted in favor of those who do.

Entries will be judged by a panel of food media and culinary professionals. Fifteen semifinalists, five from each state, will compete in person at a regional competition in Seattle, Portland or San Diego. Two regional winners from each state will win $1,000 and move on to the final round in St. Helena.

The grand prize winner at the St. Helena competition will win $10,000 plus 104 $10 vouchers for Foster Farms chicken.

“We hope to build on the success of last year’s contest which drew thousands of entries ranging from time-tested multigenerational recipes to brand new creations,” Brill said.

Foster Farms is based in the Central Valley, but it also has ranches in the Pacific Northwest. They are well known for their Foster imposter chicken advertisements, and brand themselves as fresh, locally grown and always natural. Brill said that he is pleased that this competition inspires people to get created with locally grown chicken.

The deadline to enter the cooking contest is May 31, and entries can be submitted online at www.fosterfarms .com/cookingcontest, or by mail to Foster Farms Cooking Contest, P.O. Box 306, Livingston, CA 95334. Full contest rules are also available on the website.
