Victim’s family upset with runaround

POSTED March 4, 2011 10:49 p.m.

The Patterson woman accused of a hit and run that resulted in the death of a bicyclist on a Turlock road, was arraigned Thursday in Stanislaus County Superior Court.

Vanessa Carrillo, 21, was arraigned on a felony charge of hit and run resulting in a great bodily injury and/or death and a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter. The charges are a result of a collision on Sept. 1, 2010, on Fulkerth Road that claimed the life of 27-year-old Patrick O’Connor.

According to the criminal complaint against Carrillo, she fled the scene of the collision and didn’t call authorities until an hour later.

Carrillo was released on her own recognizance and assigned a public defender.

Thursday was a bitter day for the O’Connor family, who had traveled up from Northridge to attend the hearing only to be taken to the wrong courtroom. The family has already expresses frustration with the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office regarding a delay in filing charges.

“I don’t know what is going on with the district attorney’s office, but as the parents of the victim, we deserve better, as do the people in the community,” said Jim O’Connor, Patrick’s father.
