Planada shooting injures one

POSTED August 14, 2009 9:27 p.m.
Merced County Sheriff detectives are investigating a shooting in Planada that wounded a 19-year-old man in the neck.
The wounded man is an Arizona resident, who was in Planada to attend a family memorial for a recently passed relative, said sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Tom MacKenzie.
The shooting was reported around 11 p.m. Aug. 7 in the 9000 block of Amistad Street.
The 19-year-old man and two female passengers — a 20-year-old and a 14-year-old — had given a cousin a ride home a were returning to the party when they were fired upon.
The three of them said they heard three shots and knew that two bullets had hit the car, but it wasn’t until they got back to the gathering that they discovered the 19-year-old had been shot as well, MacKenzie said.
The 19-year-old had what is described by medical personnel, as two small shards of metal in his neck that came very close to hitting his carotid artery.
“From the wounds and the description, either the bullet struck something metal sending shards into his neck, or most likely, it is the metal jacketing from a bullet that struck something then fragmented hitting the victim in the neck,” MacKenzie said.
The victim was treated and released from a Merced hospital.
The front driver side tire was flat and there was a bullet hole in the front passenger side window, MacKenzie said.
None of the three were very familiar with Planada and could offer little information about the shooting and had no suspect information to give investigators.
