Turlock players, coaches sweep top league honors

POSTED March 11, 2011 10:50 p.m.

This was Turlock High’s year when it came to basketball in the Central California Conference.

Both of the school’s boys and girls basketball programs captured outright league titles before going on and getting past the first round of their respective Sac-Joaquin Section Division I tournaments. And to make this year even sweeter, both teams boasted MVPs.

Three of them, to be exact.

That’s right — three!

In the annual end-of-the-season awards, senior guard Anthony Hubbard and senior forward Matt Ruesga shared the league’s co-MVP honors in boys basketball and senior guard Camille Roberts was voted as the CCC’s MVP in girls basketball.

They’re a part of a group that dominated this season, as 20 players from Turlock made the all-CCC teams. And the Turlock boys coach, Doug Cornfoot, and the Turlock girls coach, Salinda Mabie, won Coach of the Year honors, completing a sweep of all the league’s top individual awards.

Hubbard finished the season averaging 15.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per contest and made several clutch shots throughout the season, while Ruesga was always an immediate spark off the bench and had a 10.8-point and 5.7-rebound average.

Roberts dethroned last season’s MVP in Pitman High’s Jasmine Washington, whose nearly 20-point, 5-assist, 7.2-rebound, 1.5-block and 4.4-steal average carried the Pride to one of their best seasons with a 20-8 overall record, a 12-3 league mark (all three losses came against the Bulldogs) and a postseason appearance under first-year coach Keith Larsen.

Roberts ended her four years with the Bulldogs by averaging 14.7 points, 3.8 assists, 3 rebounds and 3.1 steals per game en route a fourth consecutive league title and a rare first-round playoff win.
