Warriors golf finishes third

POSTED March 22, 2011 10:34 p.m.

The Cal State Stanislaus men's golf team finished third at the Mustang Intercollegiate Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on Tuesday, giving the team its fourth straight top four finish this spring.

The Warriors were led by Trevor Blair and J.T. Cockerill, as both finished tied for fifth individually with scores of 228. It was a tough day for the field of 18 teams and 96 golfers, who battled strong winds that caused havoc on the Championship Course (par 72, 7,351 yards) at the University of New Mexico.

The third-place finish is the second of its kind for the Warriors, who finished second in last week's Notre Dame de Namur Argonaut Invitational in Livermore. The Warriors' were fourth in their first two tournaments — San Bernardino’s Coyote Classic and Vallejo’s Pioneer Shootout.

Cal State Monterey Bay turned in two low-round scores on Tuesday two win the Mustang Intercollegiate, which was hosted by Western New Mexico and serves as a preview of the NCAA Division II West/Central Super Regionals in May.

Monterey Bay, which was fourth after the first round, had two rounds of 302s for the victory. The Otters were led by John Jackson, the individual medalist who shot a 9-over 225. His brother, Dylan Jackson, won the tournament last week in Livermore.

Blair rebounded from an 80 in round two with a decent 75 score despite the tough weather conditions. He ended up with a 12-over 228, the same score as teammate Cockerill, who was more consistent with scores of 75, 75 and 78.

Rounding out the scoring for the 19th-ranked Warriors were Teddy Schrier and Andre Navarro, both tied for 28th with a 236, while Gary Yoro shot a 238 for 34th.
