Warriors survive a flurry of shots in women’s soccer exhibition

POSTED August 18, 2009 11:19 p.m.
Imagine allowing 21 shots — with six of them on target — and walking away in a good mood.
The Cal State Stanislaus women’s soccer team knows that feeling. The Warriors survived two overtimes and a 0-0 draw after a series of threats in an exhibition match against Sacramento State at Hornet Soccer Field on Sunday. It was thanks in part to goalkeepers Millie Brown and Jessica Sitarz, who each played a half and ended with three saves apiece.
“Millie had a fantastic save on a breakaway in the first half and Jess really stepped up with a big save in the second half and organized everything very well,” coach Gabriel Bolton said.
Brown provided a highlight reel in the 34th minute. Sac State’s Kim Kemper managed to dribble through defenders on the right side of the box and fired a shot toward the near post. But Brown reached back across her body to make a nice save, perhaps the play of the day.
The Warriors (0-0-1), along with the men’s team, will open the new Warrior Stadium with an exhibition against Dominican on Sunday starting at 4:30 p.m.
The women are also coming off a successful season in which they set single-season marks in goals (44), assists (42) and points (130), along with being ranked as high as No. 23 in the nation and third in the West Region.

Adding to the excitement
The Stanislaus men’s soccer team has added more coaching star power.
Paul Lekics, a former college and pro standout, will join Dana Taylor’s coaching staff, the school announced late last week.
Lekics starred at Creighton University from 1992-96 before playing professionally and training with top European teams during his career and competing on the U.S. national under-23 team. He adds more excitement to a CSUS program that hired Taylor, a former Division I coach from Oregon State, during the offseason.
“There is nothing a player can ask me or tell me that I can’t help them with,” Lekics said.

Annual fundraiser Saturday
The CSUS cross country teams will host the second annual Running of the Warriors, a 5K run/walk fundraiser to benefit the program, at 9 a.m. Saturday on the Turlock campus.
Registration is $20 and starts at 7 a.m. in front of Warrior Arena.
