High school round up

Bulldogs get revenge over Merced in makeup game

POSTED April 1, 2011 9:31 p.m.

With one of their best pitchers on the mound, the Turlock High baseball team exacted revenge over Merced High on Wednesday afternoon in Merced. Sophomore Nick Voumard pitched three scoreless innings and the Bulldogs won 6-0 to regain control of the Central California Conference.

On March 22, the Bulldogs suffered their first loss of the season to Merced.

Because of heavy rain, the rematch between the two schools was postponed until Wednesday. The win, as well as a 2-1 triumph over Golden Valley on Thursday, improved Turlock to 5-1 in the league standings for an 11-1 overall record. The Bears dropped to 4-2 in the CCC for a two-way tie with Pitman High.

The top three teams qualify for the playoffs.

Against the Bears, Voumard struck out four batters to extend his record to 3-0. His teammates took care of everything else, as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. It was all Turlock after that.

Kevin Kramer slammed out a home run, Jeremy McDonald finished with two RBIs and Ryan Cumberland and James Heller each had an RBI. Brent Backlund relieved Voumard in the sixth, finishing his two-inning outing with one strikeout, one hit allowed and no walks.

The Bulldogs will now face Atwater High in a home-and-away series next week, with Turlock hosting the Falcons on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Atwater snaps Pitman soccer’s streak

The Pitman girls soccer team finally experienced a CCC loss this season, as the Pride fell 1-0 to Atwater on Thursday afternoon. Even so, Pitman is still well ahead of the other league teams with a 7-1 record to go along with a 14-4-0 overall mark.

Pitman had beaten the Falcons earlier in the season with a 3-0 shutout.

The loss snapped the Pride’s seven-game winning streak.

Pitman will now prepare for a busy week, with a match at Merced High before facing Turlock on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the renovated Debely Stadium.

Big freshman performance

One highlight at the Turlock High track and field team’s opening meet at Debely Stadium on Wednesday afternoon was having freshman Rex Doo outlast competitors from Buhach Colony and Merced in the 3,200-meter run.

He was able to win his race on the last stride in 11 minutes 5 seconds.

“He is really working hard and it is really paying off for him,” Turlock track coach Mike Brown said about Doo, who was also the lone Turlock runner at last season’s Sac-Joaquin Section Meet.
