Warriors softball finishes season with wins

POSTED April 26, 2011 9:59 p.m.

The Cal State Stanislaus softball team wrapped up its 2011 season on a high note, as the Warriors swept San Francisco State with 6-0 and 6-5 wins in Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader.

Brittani Weatherford dominated from the circle, as she claimed two more wins on the season. She pitched a shutout in game one of the doubleheader, allowing only four hits and striking out three Gator batters. In the nightcap, Weatherford closed out the eighth inning without giving up a hit.

Celebrating senior day, the Warriors were determined offensively. Brittany Balanesi led the Warriors after batting 3-for-5 with three runs, an RBI, a double, a triple, and a homerun on the day. Senior catcher Missy Corral not only recorded her 100th start with the Warriors, but she left her mark at the plate, batting 4-for-7 with two runs, three RBIs and four doubles to wrap up her career.

The Warriors took an early lead over the Gators in game one, scoring four runs in the first inning. Sarah Locarnini led the rally with an infield single to the shortstop.  Locarnini then stole second to put her in scoring position. Corral doubled to the left center gap, scoring Locarnini.  Jordan Flora then hit a single to the left field move Corral over to third.

Gator pitching loaded the bases after walking Kiley Mendez with just one out in the inning.  Veronica Luna and Brittney Rickles then had back-to-back singles to the pitcher that scored two more runs which wrapped up the inning with a 4-0 lead.

The Warriors scored two more in the fifth. Starting it off was Balanesi, who smacked a triple to the right center gap. Kaitlin Goulart then belted a pinch-hit homer to left to give the Warriors a 6-0 lead that would eventually result in the final score.

The Warriors finish with a final record of 21-30 overall and 14-22 in the CCAA.

Warriors baseball sweeps NAIA team

Utilizing its final opportunities at the plate, the Cal State Stanislaus baseball team won two one-run games against Simpson University on a long Saturday afternoon at Warrior Baseball Field.

The Warriors rallied to tie in the ninth and won it in the 10th of the opener with a 7-6 decision. Then, Stanislaus took the nightcap with a 4-3 victory after tying in the eighth and finishing off the Red Hawks in the ninth.

The doubleheader sweep, which lasted 19 innings and nearly six and a half hours, propelled the Warriors to 20-17 overall. Stanislaus also snapped an eight-game skid while extending its win-streak over Simpson to eight games.
With two more one-run games, the Warriors improved to 8-7 on the year in games decided by one run.

Vince Hungerford homered twice on the day — a solo shot in both games — to lead the Warriors on offense. His second homerun came in the bottom of the eighth that tied the game at 3-3 after Simpson took the lead just minutes earlier. He also led off the second inning of game one with a solo shot to leftfield.

Simpson, a NAIA team from Redding, fell to 13-25 this season.
