Cal State Stanislaus sophomore runner Terrance Ellis was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Male Track and Field Athlete of the Week for his efforts during the week of April 18-24.

At the Brutus Hamilton Open at Cal last weekend, Ellis hit a national championship provisional qualifying mark in the 800-meter race with a personal-best time of 1 minute, 52.46 seconds — which was also good enough to land him at 13th on the national qualifying list. Ellis, a graduate of Stockton’s Stagg High, will have a few more weeks to better his time to insure one of the top 16 spots for next month’s national meet in Turlock.

His time edged the provisional mark by just .09 seconds. The automatic qualifying time is 1:49.9.

“This was a great time for Terrance and he is running fast at the right time of the year,” Stanislaus distance coach Diljeet Taylor said last weekend after Ellis’ race. “Our goal was to hit a provisional and now we just need to continue to improve as the season winds down.”

This year’s NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships will be at the Al Brenda Track at Warrior Stadium on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus on May 26-28. Before then, the Stanislaus athletes are also preparing to host the CCAA Championships on May 5-7.
