Stanislaus men’s basketball adds JC transfers, prep standout

POSTED May 20, 2011 9:42 p.m.

Coming off a run in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament, the Cal State Stanislaus men’s basketball has added four players for the upcoming fall season. Earlier this week, coach Larry Reynolds announced the signings of junior college transfers Vincent Fuller (El Camino College in Torrance), Joe Malone (El Camino College) and Donald Gaines (Southwestern College in San Diego) and nearby Amador High standout Clinton Tremelling.

All the signees are guards.

Fuller, who stands 6-foot-3, averaged 15.7 points for El Camino College — enough for first-team South Coast Conference honors. Malone, also 6-foot-3, follows a similar path as Fuller. Malone had a 13.3-point average for El Camino College, and that helped him secure a spot on the all-SCC first team.

“This tandem of Fuller and Malone has been together since their high school days at Verbum Dei in Los Angeles,” Reynolds said.

The last JC transfer is Gaines, a 6-foot-5 guard who averaged 12.8 points and 9.8 rebounds and shot 63 percent from the field. His numbers earned him all-Pacific Coast Conference first-team honors, as he led his team to the conference title.

“Donald comes to us from a very successful JC program,” Reynolds noted. “He is a good athlete that can play multiple positions. An active rebounder and good defender, he will add versatility to our team.”

Tremelling is the lone high school recruit, as he comes from Amador High in Sutter Creek. There, he guided his team to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV Championship after posting averages of 16.2 points, 5 assists, 5.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals.

He also shot 40 percent from the 3-point line.

“A point guard with great vision and basketball IQ,” Reynolds said about Tremelling. “He can keep defenders honest with his outside shooting ability.”
