Pitman girls’ 4x100 relay takes sixth

Turlock High junior Nicole Cipponeri cleared 9 feet, 9 inches at this week’s Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Meet in Sacramento to finish 14th overall.

Soon after sophomore Kelsee Derr got the baton in the Pitman High girls' 4x100-meter relay finals at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters on Friday evening at Sacramento City College's Hughes Stadium, everything became a blur.
Her heart rate went up.
Her mind practically shut down.
She was giving it her all.
During her final leg of the race, Derr was able to pass up a couple runners. Her effort helped the Pride to a sixth-place finish with a time of 49.47 seconds in the highlight for area athletes at this week's Section meet. The Pitman girls were just .67 seconds from third-place Fairfield High, which would've been the third and final spot to qualify for next week's CIF State Championships.
A sixth-place finish also tells coach Thad Moren that his Pitman track and field program is moving in the right direction: "This year, the kids put their hearts into it. There were some disappointments, but it's good to have seniors that put their all into it."
The perfect example of this is Aman Hundal, who ran the second leg of Pitman's relay race. At last week's Division I Championships, she pulled her hamstring as she helped her team to a 10th-place finish. Of course, the Pride were bummed that they didn't make the top eight of that meet to compete in the next day's finals, but their finish was enough to qualify for the Section meet.
That meant the Pride and Hundal were given more time to rest for this week.
"It was all in God's hands the whole time," Derr said. "It was pretty amazing."
Junior Jasmine Roberson opened the race with a good start. Hundal kept the pace going despite a pulled hamstring and Hailey Stroud was able to give a good, clean handoff to Derr, who managed to pass up a couple teams.
Pitman's 4x100-meter relay finish was the highest finish out of all the performances from the Turlock area. Erica Sickert took seventh in the shot put with a distance of 37 feet, 9 ½ inches, and teammate Derr placed eighth in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.85 seconds.
