After his bittersweet fifth-place showing at last month's CIF State Championships, it looked like Turlock High wrestler Fabian Garcia could no longer wrestle. His voice was low, his head was down. He couldn't hide his sadness and dissatisfaction in his post-match interviews.

THS’ Moreno captures national title

This is how much Turlock High junior Alexia Moreno and Santa Fe High's Tamara Tillman wanted a national wrestling title: In the second round of their 121-pound final match of the USAW Girls Folkstyle National Tournament in Oklahoma City, Okla., last weekend, the two bumped heads in an attempt to gain a shot at the same exact time.

After being stadium-less, Turlock athletes have a place to practice, excel

It was an oh-so ordinary day for the Turlock High track and field athletes on Monday afternoon at Joe Debely Stadium. Hurdlers and jumpers loosened their limbs on an artificial turf field. Runners warmed up on an all-weather track. Pole vaulters battled a slight wind down a marked runway before extending skyward.

PREP FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK

After continuing the school's best start ever, the Pitman High football team is taking the week off. No game this Friday night. Just another week of much-needed practice, though the Pride are 5-0. Their coach, Brandon Harris, believes his team still has a lot of work left to do. It doesn't matter that the Pride easily handled another opponent last week. This time, it was a 42-0 thumping at Franklin High in ...

PREP SPORTS NOTEBOOK

It was a nice little break for the Pitman High volleyball team, seeing how competitive the Central California Conference can be. Last weekend, the Pride made the trek to Oakdale High and came back with the school's tournament title after beating the host team in two games in the championship. "Every player on the team did their part to help with the win," Pitman coach Kristen Pontes said. "All of the girls ...

Yellowjackets hand Ripon first loss

HILMAR - The Hilmar High football team was not intimidated by Ripon High's undefeated record heading into Friday's Trans-Valley League opener. The Yellowjackets, whom coach Frank Marques has dubbed one of his most talented teams, had an all-around performance in front of thousands of fans at their own football field and stomped all over Ripon with a 49-13 thrashing. Hilmar, now 4-1, gave the Indians (4-1) their first loss of the season. <p ...

Bulldogs continue dominant campaign

When he sees his teammates slipping, Turlock High boys soccer defender Diego Godinez is not shy about letting them know. He'd yell, "Keep up the intensity!" Or shout, "Act like you want it!" Or simply scream out: "Let's go!" But the loudest statement made Thursday afternoon at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex wasn't made by him. It was by his teammates. The Bulldogs, in the middle of one of ...

Bulldogs take sole possession of CCC, beat defending champ

Doug Sperry thought his Turlock High boys soccer team came out slow and flat against Golden Valley High on Tuesday night. His players agreed, as they succumbed to a game of long ball - "that's not our style," Sperry said - and allowed an early goal to the defending Central California Conference champion. The score was a much-needed wakeup call. From there, the Bulldogs took control. Two second-half goals to break a ...

Bulldogs survive chaotic end against Panthers

MODESTO - In coach James Peterson's mind, perhaps as well as in the minds of hundreds of spectators on the visiting side of Downey High's Hughes Stadium, the game should've ended with Sean Downs' knee softly touching the turf field. Instead, chaos broke out. After the Bulldogs emerged out of an early two-touchdown hole, they controlled the ball with a little over a minute left in Saturday night's nonconference showdown with Modesto ...

Pitman football achieves historic 4-0 mark

Soon after Friday night's game was over, the Pitman High football team, commanded by junior defender Nick Renteria, charged toward the crowded home side of Joe Debely Stadium. Renteria got up on the railing and began pumping his arms. His antics caused quite a commotion, with fans roaring back and his teammates, who were surrounding him, doing the exact same thing. On this night, the Pride had a lot to cheer about. <p ...

Bulldogs beat league foes en route to tournament title

For the Turlock High boys water polo team, one of the benefits of winning last weekend's Central Cal Tournament is that the Bulldogs got a glimpse of what's ahead in the Central California Conference. What the Bulldogs noticed was they're well ahead of their competition, as they captured back-to-back tournament titles on Saturday after handing Merced High a 14-4 thumping in the championship match but only after they convincingly marched past Atwater High ...

PREP FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK

The Hilmar High football team secured another statement win on Saturday afternoon, when the Yellowjackets emerged out of Castroville with a 33-6 nonconference victory over North Monterey County High. The Yellowjackets (3-1 overall) scored all 33 of their points before the Condors, who were playing without their suspended starting quarterback, got a meaningless score late in the game. Hilmar scored on its first play only 20 seconds into the game after quarterback Andrew ...

Bulldogs wrap up first day of tourney with 3-0 record

The Turlock High boys water polo team concluded Friday's opening rounds of the Central Cal Tournament with a 3-0 record, and the Bulldogs credited their winnings to what happened a week ago. At the John Schmitt Tournament in San Jose, where 32 teams competed, the Bulldogs captured three wins. But their two losses and experiences against some strong, unfamiliar teams helped them beyond that weekend, they said. "We were challenged," Turlock coach ...

Local Pirates shine

MODESTO - It was one of those moments that couldn't have happened a couple years ago. Quarterback Quinton McCown called a play during a recent evening practice, speaking a language that only his teammates and coaches understand. Once the ball was snapped, he handed it off to the freight train known as Markus Sanders. Within the Modesto Junior College football program, this scene was a usual occurrence. A couple years ago, ...

Soccer teams kick off season in right direction

So far, the Turlock High boys soccer team has proven it can repeat last season's success. Better yet, the Bulldogs might just surpass it. Last season, they made the playoffs for the first time in seven years. This season, they're 12-0-1 overall and 3-0 in the Central California Conference before a big-time showdown against Golden Valley High on Tuesday night at Debely Stadium. In other words, they want to continue improving - ...

‘Jackets shut out D-I’s Enochs in second half

MODESTO - On opening night a few weeks ago, the Hilmar High football team committed a hard-to-forget blunder.
