Delhi Medical Academy hopes to groom next generation of medical professionals

When Dr. Eloisa Fuentes, a former Delhi resident and Livingston High graduate, was in college she would hear her classmates talking about career ambitions in advanced medical fields. After some time she decided that if they could reach for the stars then she could too. After she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology at California State University, Fresno in 1997 (magna cum laude), she moved onto the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine and then Stanford for her residency.

Healty speech winners

Three local students were recognized at the Merced County Speech Festival awards ceremony held Feb. 29. Students were given three speech topics to choose from, fourth and fifth grades speech topics centered around healthy eating habits and one of the favorite topics was "If the saying were true, 'You are what you eat,' who would you be? How could you make a difference at home or school with regards to nutrition?"

Turlock students to represent region on overseas trips

Julien Elementary sixth grader Megan Vanhoogmoed and Denair Middle School sixth grader Matthew Heffe will be among a group of about 25 exceptional young people who will represent the region as ambassadors during a two-week visit to England and France this summer. Turlock Junior High seventh grader Whitney Perry will be part of another delegation bound for England and France, as well as Germany, The Netherlands and Switzerland

Valley flush with blossoming almond trees

Almond trees throughout the Turlock area are beginning to bloom due to a warmer than normal winter. Despite a record low rainfall total so far this year, almond grower and Turlock Irrigation District Director Ron Macedo said he expects a good harvest.
