McDonald’s to hire 50,000 in single day
Now all those people who say "I'll flip burgers if it comes down to it," can put their money where their mouth is. McDonald's is hiring 50,000 new full and part-time people during a national hiring event on April 19.

Learning about space
Walnut Elementary Education Center celebrated "Space Week" this week. Space week started 15 years ago to commemorate astronaut Alan Sheppard's first U.S. manned space launch. Students at Walnut learned about aerodynamics, flight control and design, and rocketry. Fifth grade teacher Bret Sutterley said Space Week is now done in conjunction with California Standardized Testing to loosen up what can be a tight atmosphere on campus.

BBQ FOR LIFE
Some tasty barbecue ribs were cooked up over open flames during the 4th Annual Century 21 M&M and Associates Rib Cook-Off benefiting the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life on Friday. Over 400 people attended the event, which featured 17 barbecue teams, raffles and even cupcakes. The team with the best barbecue wins bragging rights and a traveling trophy. M&M hopes to raise $6,000 this year.
TUSD school communities raise funds for sixth grade camp
Where there's a will, there's a way. In a remarkable display of cooperation, dedication and commitment all nine Turlock Unified School District elementary schools raised enough funds to send every single sixth grader to Foothill Horizons camp in May.

A group of sixth-grade students from Julien Elementary in Turlock recently competed in the Stanislaus County Math Blast. More than 200 sixth-grade students from across the county participated in the event.
Crowell principal earns top honors
Before Linda Alaniz became principal of Crowell Elementary School in Turlock five years ago, there was a slight disconnect between parent, teachers and administrators. While the school was functioning, it wasn't doing so at its highest level, according to numerous parents and teachers on campus.
Local students excel at Occupational Olympics
The 26th Annual Stanislaus County Occupational Olympics and Career Exposition was held Wednesday at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds in Turlock. More than 800 students from county high schools participated in 23 competitive events. In addition to the events 54 business and industry representatives exhibited and spoke to students during the Career Expo.
Turlocker named Middle School Teacher of the Year
Turlock resident Jeanne Hartman, a resource specialist teacher at Empire Elementary K-8 School in Empire, was recently named the California League of Middle Schools' "Middle School Educator of the Year."
Junior high rallies ‘Just for Jeremiah’
About a month ago Turlock Junior High School seventh grader Jeremiah Coghill started feeling ill. He was weak, had random nose bleeds, and was sleeping 20 hours a day and he had lost 15 pounds.

EDUCATION: MATHLETES
Turlock High School math students recently competed in the Stanislaus Math Council's High School Math Competition held at CSU Stanislaus. Angie Mendoza captured first place in math analysis. Rojas was awarded Honorable Mention in Geometry, Pruitt earned 3rd place in Geometry and McGinnis took home an Honorable Mention in Calculus.
Testing perfection
Turlock Unified School District released the names of students who scored perfect 600s on their California Standards Tests. TUSD had 110 students who reached perfection and five students who earned perfect scores in more than one subject testing area. The CSTs include testing for general math, English-language arts, geometry, algebra 1, algebra 2, summative high school math, integrated high school math, history-social science, science, biology, chemistry, earth science ...
Walking for a cause
Community members took a hike for cancer at the annual Turlock Relay for Life, held Saturday at Dutcher Middle School. Thousands of people and dozens of organizations participated in the event, which smashed a projected fundraising goal of $200,000 and raised $265,000 for the American Cancer Society and cancer research.
Mystery solved: Time capsules discovered in fair arch
The mystery behind the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds arch gate time capsule was solved Saturday in front of hundreds of on-lookers.
THS Speech students quiet competition
The Turlock High School Speech and Debate team bested the competition over the school year en route to a perfect undefeated season. In 10 individual and debate sweepstakes, THS took home 10 trophies for first place and the program was named Leading Chapter in the Big Valley District.
Painting the town purple
Purple ribbons were hung around Turlock this week to raise awareness for today's Relay For Life event at Dutcher Middle School. Last year the community raised $198,000 for the American Cancer Society this year the goal is $205,000. The event is open to the public and will be held all day.
Taste of Navy life
Turlock High School NJROTC cadets trained on the proper use of a fire hose during an instructional session with the Turlock Fire Department- Engine 33 this week. In the Navy all personnel aboard a ship must participate in firefighting training and drills and in boot camp a heavy emphasis is placed on disaster response training. The cadets also practiced Navy boot camp exercises.
Cunningham begins to see improvement
Last year Turlock Unified School District undertook the challenge of "turning around" Cunningham Elementary using a modified state model in order to pull the school out of being on the state's list of lowest-performing schools for the past three school years.

Cookies for a cause
Girl Scout Troop 3378 (Turlock) donated hundreds of dollars worth toys and goods to the Children's Crisis Center- Verda's House in Turlock. The money raised came from Girl Scout cookie sales.
Local athletes to compete at Special Olympics
For Turlocker Jake Sroufe, 12, the Special Olympics have been instrumental in his life. Jake's mother, Shawnda, said his participation in the athletics program has helped develop his social skills and his physical fitness level.
Merced College drafting welcomes students from MJC defunct program
Sonora resident Audrey Wynn is looking to change careers. The part-time funeral home beautician has attempted to explore a career change to interior design and drafting, but in recent years the classes she needed kept being cut at Columbia College and Modesto Junior College.
