Time to bring real reform to VA

Getting in the room to see the doctor is the hardest part. That is what I hear most often from the tens of thousands of Central Valley veterans. Long wait times for appointments and lengthy commutes prevent them from accessing the care that they have earned through their service. In Turlock, a veteran looking for specialty care faces a 90 mile journey to the nearest full service Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Palo Alto. This trip is especially difficult for elderly veterans or those with limited financial resources.

Marilyn Rose Davenport/Morrett

Marilyn Davenport passed away peacefully in Turlock on July 31st after a brave battle with lung disease. She was born and raised in Minneapolis, MN, then moved to California in 1950 upon marrying Henry Morrett and earning her nursing degree. She worked in hospitals for 19 years and another 10 years as an aerospace industry nurse in southern California. She highly valued her work as an ER nursing supervisor and enjoyed the variety of patients she served. She raised her two beloved sons, Hal and Bryan, mostly as a single mother, following the premature death of Henry in 1961. In ...

Status of 2014 drought conditions

According to US Drought Monitor, approximately 35 percent of the country is experiencing drought conditions. California in particular is suffering from severe to exceptional stages of drought caused by high pressure air blocking storms from moving our way. As these conditions worsen and we struggle through this run of historically dry weather, we see further declines in reservoir levels, dustier air, and thirstier lawns.

Julia S. Sleeper

Julia was born in Chicago, IL to Samuel and Nanajon Yohannan and passed away in Turlock at the age of 85. She settled in Turlock at the age of fifteen and graduated from Turlock High School. In 1957 she married Brad Sleeper and they shared 57 years of marriage. Julia was passionate about her Assyrian community and actively involved in and treasurer for the Assyrian American Civic Club of Turlock. One of her favorite activities was playing "Takhta", backgammon. She also loved to read and play bridge.

Pennie Ralston Hearn

Pennie was born on October 21, 1954 in Grangeville, Idaho to Everett and Emily (Billie) Ralston. She was one of six children. She fought a brave battle against cancer and went home to be with our Lord on Tuesday, August 5, 2014. She was 59 years old.

Evelyn E. Besone

Evelyn was born and raised on a dairy ranch in Stevinson, CA and passed away at the age of 97 in Encino, California. She graduated from Hilmar High School and settled in Turlock where she lived for over 60 years. Evelyn worked for Haucks Drug Store and was a secretary for Dr. Moline's office for several years.

Dorothy Gladys Ross

Dorothy Wire Ross was called home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 6, 2014 just weeks shy of her 102nd birthday. Dorothy was born in Chino, CA to Charles and Jo (Passmore) Wire. She attended high school in Chino and Chaffey College in Ontario before marrying Harlon Clyde Ross in 1932. Together they worked hard farming in the Pomona and Etiwanda areas before settling in Turlock in 1963. She helped feed chickens, clean eggs, smudge citrus, bottle feed calves and any other work that needed to be done on the ranch and in the home ...
