Giant human pink hard hat ribbon creates visual call to action

Pink ribbons are a common sight leading into October, as communities aim to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Delaying the health insurance tax will spare further cost to California agriculture

The Health Insurance Tax (HIT), a multibillion-dollar annual tax created by the Affordable Care Act, is set to return on Jan. 1, forcing nearly 100 million Americans - including employers, families and individuals - to pay for a 3 to 5 percent increase in health insurance premiums. It may not seem obvious, but this tax will strike the agricultural industry hard, hurting hundreds of thousands of farmers and employees in California's fertile heartland and countless others nationwide.

Are you noticing the "YES on S" signs all around the county? We certainly hope so - our county libraries operate on this 1/8 cent tax. This small tax provides 89 percent of our public libraries budget. We have been paying this since 1995; the tax is a designated tax and can only be used for the libraries. We need to renew it this election, and 2/3 of all votes are needed.

Duane Curtis Olesen

Duane was born in Turlock and was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Turlock High School where he played both football and baseball. After High School, Duane served in the National Guard for six years. He worked in the family business, Curtesy Oil, for 56 years during that time he drove truck for the family business for over 40 years. He coached Turlock Youth Football and Little League for many years. More recently, he treasured time spent with his grandchildren and enjoyed watching football.

Nicholas Marquez Gonzales

Nicholas was born in Mecca, California to Nick and Frances Gonzales and passed away at the age of 82. He lived in Newman, Gustine and Hilmar before settling in Turlock most recently. Nicholas worked as a truck driver for many years, in business with his brother Manuel and then later driving for Ted Peters Trucking, Souza's Trucking and retiring from Stavrianoudakis Enterprises. Nicholas attended Catholic Church. His hobbies included driving truck, building model airplanes, reading and one of his favorites cooking tamales at Christmas time. He loved to entertain his family and friends.

Darlene M. Avila, 51, passed away on Sept. 21, 2017 and has joined her husband Rick in heaven. Darlene was born July 17, 1966 in Hammond, Louisiana to Glenn and Sharon Passman. At age 13, Darlene's family relocated to Delhi, California. Here Darlene would finish school and begin working for Olde Tyme Pastries in Turlock as a cake decorator. She married Rick Avila on October 28, 1989. They shared 25 years of marriage before Rick passed away in 2014. Charles Walter Hansen

Charles Walter Hansen passed on September 17, after a short illness at the age of 93. Charlie was born in Lompoc, Ca on October 6th 1923 to Walter and Mildred Hansen, graduated from Santa Ynez High School in 1941, and served in the Army during WWII from 1944 to 1945 in the Philippines. Charlie then moved to Patterson, CA in 1947 and started farming with Rube and Dean Houk. Charlie married his sweetheart Lois Traver in 1951 and together they raised four children in Patterson.
