More water flow needed for fish, finds delta report

More water should be allowed to flow through the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and into the San Francisco Bay, according to a State Water Board report which was unanimously approved Tuesday.The 180-page informational report, required by the 2009 Delta Reform Act and not directly tied to any legislative action, establishes the volume, quality and timing of water flow needed to protect fish and wildlife."For the first time, the board has come forth with explicit estimates on flows needed to protect the estuary and the results are not surprising," said Bill Jennings, executive director of the California Sportfishing Protection Alliance ...

Shirley Mae (Hawkins) Sperry

Shirley Mae (Hawkins) Sperry, 74, passed away peacefully in Modesto on July 29 after experiencing complications from a broken hip. Shirley was born in Missouri and moved to Livingston when she was four years old. She attended both elementary school and high school in Livingston. Early in life she was a mother, homemaker, bowler, and a cook. While her children were in high school, Shirley worked as a waitress at Livingston's famous Blueberry Hill Restaurant. She also worked at Tahoe Inn Restaurant in South Lake Tahoe, and at Lyon's Restaurant in Turlock for 23 years.

Bonnie Willhite passed away on July 28, 2010. She was born Feb. 6, 1933 in Riverside to Done and Hester (Donnell) Lewis. Her mortal life on this earth ended with the promise of immortality given to her by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Bonnie was a pioneer of the early Head Start Program for pre-school children at the Delhi Head Start for 17 years. She then worked in the field of data auditing for Blue Shield of California. She was forced into early retirement at age 56 due to chronic ailments from childhood.

Marsha Mary Resor, 71, of Delhi, passed away Thursday afternoon peacefully at her residence surrounded by her family. Marsha was born in California in April 1939. She graduated from Sir Francis Drake High School in San Anselmo. She married Joseph Resor after she graduated from high school. They moved around the Bay Area before settling in Delhi in 1997. She enjoyed painting, knitting, and belonged to the First Southern Baptist Church in Denair.

Lillian S. Freitas, 97, of Turlock, passed away on July 26. She was a homemaker for 70 years and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Turlock. She enjoyed gardening, crotchet, embroidery and cooking. She gave many of her embroidery works to family and friends.

Ottis Cleo Hamner

Ottis Cleo Hamner, 100, passed away on Wednesday, July 28 at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock. He was born in 1910 in Illinois to Noah and Pearl Hamner. He moved to Orange County in 1921, before he settled in Denair in 1942. Ottis was a self-employed plumber and farmer for most of his adult life. He was a past board member of the Modesto Gospel Mission and Heartstone Bible Conference. He was a member of the Independent Fundamental Churches of America, and also worked in the AWANA program at the First Baptist Church in Ceres.
