The absence of reason

Say, what!?!?!! Should Turlock say "Yea" or "Nay" to those council members who just voted to deny the right of their fellow members to abstain from a vote? I suppose it depends on how one views decision making. Let's look at decision making at a personal level. In every election, I am faced with choices between minor candidates whose character I have no way of knowing. Likewise, I have to decide to vote on initiatives, like the one on the housing of chickens, on which I will never have the expertise to be able to make a responsible decision ...

Piano bar owner refunded part of permit fee

In a compromise, the Turlock City Council on Tuesday agreed to refund $1,415 to Vintage Lounge owner Dan Gray, or half of the amount charged when he amended the piano bar's hours of operation earlier this year.

Ralph Cecil Bowland

Ralph C. Bowland, 91, of Modesto, passed away July 13. He was born in Fair Grove, Mo., and after graduating from high school in 1936, his family moved to Turlock. He played in the minor leagues for the Chicago Cubs in 1940 and 1941.

Mark A. Long

Mark was born in Chicago, Ill. to James and Lorraine Long. The family moved to Long Beach in 1957, and then to Turlock in 1962. He lived in Ceres when he passed away at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. He retired from the USDA in 2008, and enjoyed golfing and riding his motorcycle.

Paramjit Kaur, 50, of Ceres, tragically passed away July 20. She was born and raised in India and moved to Ceres less than two years ago. Her husband and son were planning to move here to join the family soon. She was a homemaker.

Lars Zarak Banks, 53, passed away on July 16 in Patterson. Lars was born in Oakland and was an armored car carrier for 26 years. He was also a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Oakland.

Chester L. Hart, 95, of Livingston, died on July 24 in Turlock. He was a foreman for Monte Cristo Nut Company in Livingston for many years. He was also a member of the Church of Christ in Livingston.

Raul O. Parga, 70, passed away peacefully on July 26 at Emanuel Medical Center following a long battle with kidney disease.

Ruth was born in Oklahoma. Her family came to California in the early 1940s and they lived in Richmond. Later they settled in Delhi, where Ruth lived for 65 years.

Gaylor “George” F. Lucas

George Lucas, 85, of Ceres, passed away at Memorial Medical Center on July 19. He was born in Oklahoma in 1925 to Samuel and Sallie Lucas. His family moved to California when he was very young. He graduated from high school, married his lifelong companion, Lola Mae, and worked for 39 years as a refrigeration engineer at Merchants Refrigeration plant in Modesto.
