The recent arrest of Anna Ybarra for embezzlement is the very sad result of another supposed adult selfishly tarnishing an organization developed for the enjoyment of children.

Local schools to benefit from tobacco use prevention grant

The Stanislaus County Office of Education recently received $1.8 million in grants for their Tobacco Use Prevention Program from the California Department of Education. This money is to help educate students in sixth to12th grades about the negative health effects of smoking.

Turlock instructor wins big at State Fair

Turlock High agriculture teacher, Chad Russell, won the instructor sweepstakes at the California State Fair in August due to his students' success. All of his ag students won first place at the Fair, which gave their instructor the most points at the end to win his own prize. Russell won a plaque and $150.

TUSD hires consultant for special education program

In hopes of improving the special education program and reducing costs, the Turlock Unified School District hired the School Innovations and Advocacy, Inc. to be a consultant from Aug. 1 to June 30, 2010. TUSD trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to contract with SI & A.

Campaign signs tell us nothing

The forthcoming election has brought out many large and very bright signs for the candidates. Wouldn't it be nice if Turlock had an ordinance prohibiting the placement of signs before Oct. 1? While the signs make a point, they do not provide information on who the candidates are, their education, background, or their knowledge of the Ed-code of California. What about their positions on those issues not controlled by County and State Educational Codes and policies? And most important , what is the extent of their knowledge of educational finances?

Dam busters

In the last 12 years, over 400 hydroelectric dams and their associated reservoirs have been dismantled in the United States of America. While China is building dams all over the place, the United States is tearing them down. Why?

Jacqueline Sanchez-Lucatero

Cremation will follow at 2 p.m. She passed away on Aug. 30, 2009, at Emanuel Medical Center with her family at her side.

Stumbling on good finds in odd places

About a decade ago I was cruising up a 130-mile long reservoir behind America's largest dam - Grand Coulee - built across the mighty Columbia River. The area around the reservoir is rural, but it's hardly the isolated wilderness of the Yukon. Nevertheless, geologists are still finding some quite intriguing things that lie in such rural places, because there are many outcrops still on Earth that we just haven't looked at seriously.
