Grass fire on Glenwood

A Turlock firefighter extinguishes flames on the side of Glenwood Avenue in Turlock Thursday afternoon. The fire burned several trees and scorched at least one telephone pole over an area about 100 yards long and 10 feet wide. The fire is believed to have been ignited by a vehicle that caught on fire. It remains under investigation.

Nate Costa is back, ready to not only share his football IQ with the area's youth but with its high school players as well. Last year, Costa-Hilmar High and University of Oregon alumnus-hosted his first ever youth football camp in association with Sting Football Camp that drew upwards of 60 kids.

March for Democracy stops in Turlock

Roughly 20 activists with the grassroots organization 99Rise converged on Central Park in Turlock Friday afternoon on one of many stops in their 480-mile California March for Democracy. The march, which was in its 28th day as of Friday, began in Los Angeles and is set to end in Sacramento on June 22 where organizers and supporters are expected to sit in at the capital and demand that legislators acknowledge "Big Money's" role in the corruption of politics.

Retired Turlock teacher shares love of cycling, photography

If you happen to cross paths with Ray Houlihan you're likely to hear a story and be shown several photographs. About what depends on the day, but Turlock High baseball and local events are often a safe bet. Long since retired as a teacher, Houlihan spends his time covering the Turlock community with his camera in hand, often chatting up his subjects and getting contact information so he can share with them his photos.

Pitman High was well represented during this year's CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Track and Field Trials and Finals on Thursday and Friday at Elk Grove High School as at least eight of its 12 qualifying athletes finished in the top 14 of their respective events.

Tyler Murphy’s recovery continues

Tyler Murphy's world was turned upside down last August when a boating accident derailed his collegiate baseball dreams. While the injuries he sustained and the doctors' prognosis for his recovery seemed bleak at first, Murphy wowed friends, family, and supporters by standing on his own two feet, unassisted, only two months after the accident.

Karenee Demery in contention for NCAA Woman of the Year

She's a three-time CCAA Offensive Player of the Year, three-time Daktronics West Region Player of the Year, four-time All-American, and the 2013 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Player of the Year. She's led the women's soccer team of California State University, Stanislaus to two CCAA Championships and is currently considered to be the program's best player-ever.

Gonzalez back in action in Las Vegas main event

It's been half a year since Turlock's Lewis Gonzalez was forced to withdraw from what would have been his first shot at a World Series of Fighting championship belt. Scheduled to face Justin Gaethje on Jan. 18, Gonzalez suffered a knee injury weeks prior to the event and was forced to sit and watch as Gaethje defeated his replacement, Richard Patishnock, via TKO to become WSOF's inaugural Lightweight Champion.

Turlock ag students bid fond farewell to award-winning FFA advisor, ag teacher

Turlock High's FFA program has been a California powerhouse for the better part of the last decade, having earned eight consecutive Chapter Group titles at both the State and Stanislaus County Fairs in addition to laying claim to Most Outstanding Project awards during seven of those years.
