UC Merced to double campus size by 2020

The University of California, Merced, has announced plans for its next major phase of campus development. The four-year construction project will nearly double the physical capacity of the campus by 2020, allowing it to grow to 10,000 students while also providing a large number of area jobs.

Conference highlights food, housing insecurity among CSU students

College students tend to have a lot on their plates, like homework, papers and exams. But, the one thing that many are missing on their plates may be the most important, and that's food. To try and help fix this problem as well as the issue of student homelessness, the California State University Chancellor's Office hosted the first statewide Food and Housing Security Conference this week, convening CSU staff, faculty, administrators and students to collaborate on the effort to provide stability to those insecure students.

Whether they hope to one day become a United States Navy SEAL or simply want to do their best in school, the Assyrian American Civic Club Youth Group now knows one thing: substance abuse will keep them from achieving their goals. Jason, a U.S. Navy Seal and speaker for Applied Performance Sciences, educated the group Sunday on the physiological effects of poor lifestyle choices and the specific ways in which these choices directly impact their ability to perform on the sports field, on the stage, in the classroom and, ultimately, in life.

Lifeguards perfect their skills at regional training

As pools around the valley begin to open for the summer, local lifeguards were able to perfect their life-saving skills Friday morning at the fifth annual California Park and Recreation Society's Aquatic Training for District Five lifeguards. Around 120 lifeguards gathered at the Johansen High School pool in Modesto to work on their ability to prevent and save swimmers from drowning, as well as their capability to work efficiently with emergency responders in crisis situations.
