Library offers prizes for readers, host of June activities

Batman, Deadpool and "Star Wars" characters Kylo Ren and Rey were on hand at the Turlock Public Library on Saturday to help kick off the annual Summer Reading Program, which helps students sharpen their reading skills while on break from school. Amid the games, obstacle courses and superheroes that filled the lawn was an opportunity for parents to sign themselves or their children up for the program.

Historic railroad depot commemorates centennial year

Nearly 100 years ago, construction on the Southern Pacific Railroad Co. train depot was completed. After persistent demands from the citizens of Turlock, the city finally had a brand new depot intended specifically to accommodate passengers, rather than the goods and merchandise the site formerly shipped. June 7 will mark the depot's centennial celebration, and since its construction the building has seen almost all of the history that Turlock has to offer.

Board of Supervisors adopts ordinance to update transit fare structure

The Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors voted on May 10 to establish new fares, amend, and eliminate existing transit fares for Stanislaus Regional Transit. The changes were triggered by the eligibility of Federal Transit Administration funds, said Public Works Director Matt Machado.

Turlock Adult School held its commencement ceremony on Wednesday, kicking off Turlock's graduation season. Students in the area will be marching to the beat of Pomp and Circumstance over the course of the next two weeks, with nine schools holding graduation ceremonies.

Stanislaus State welcomes actors to spur voter registration

Students at Stanislaus State were star struck Wednesday as the university hosted actors Kendrick Sampson of "The Vampire Diaries," "Gracepoint," and "How to Get Away with Murder" and Max Carver from "Desperate House Wives," "Teen Wolf," and "The Leftovers" in an effort to encourage students to register to vote in the upcoming election.
