New Turlock sports and recreation facilities study underway

The Turlock City Council and the Parks, Arts and Recreation Commission planned Tuesday to receive an update from the Sports Management Group on the progress of the Sports and Recreation Facilities Prioritization and Feasibility Study, but because of low attendance from the PARC, the update was given to PARC Chair Brent Bohlender and present community members.

Local student receives trapshooting scholarship

Since age 11, Hilmar High School student Josh Lopes has had a passion for trapshooting. He spent his days shooting at clay pigeons with his father at his grandparents' ranch, honing his skills and developing a love for the sport. Now, Lopes has been shooting competitively for seven years and is headed to Lindenwood University in the fall on a trapshooting scholarship.

Flag retirement ceremony provides special moment for Girl Scouts

Denair Girl Scout Junior Troop 3102 received a lesson in patriotism Monday when the Denair Lions Club showed them how to properly retire flags. The troop learned how to dispose of flags that are no longer fit to fly in a ceremony held at the Denair Community Center.

First annual Tamale Festival set to hit Turlock

Another delicious festival will hit the streets of Turlock on May 1 when the Turlock Poker Room and Casino hosts the first annual Turlock Tamale Festival. Poker room owner Joe Fernandez wanted to bring something new and fun to the Turlock community, ultimately deciding on a festival complete with live performances, vendors and of course, tamales.

Parks Commission evaluates event funding requests

The Parks, Arts and Recreation Commission considered funding requests from organizations wishing to receive funds from the 2016-2017 Community Events and Activities Grant for their events scheduled throughout the next year. Each organization gave a five minute presentation at the PARC meeting Wednesday, highlighting statistics including how their event did last year, revenue produced and out-of-town visitors the event generated.

Turlock and Hilmar prepare to relay for a cure

The battle against cancer is something that affects many people, and every year hundreds of community members come together through Relay For Life to raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from the terrible disease. This year, Hilmar and Turlock will host their own community fundraising walks to help find a cure.

Garden club helps downtown Turlock welcome spring
