Know Your Neighbor: Jerry Powell

Central Valley born and raised, Turlock resident Jerry Powell has made a name for himself in the city through his work in real estate, construction and development and thanks to downtown nightlife destinations The Udder Place and The Grand Cru, which he co-owns. The businessman served in the Marine Corps from 1988 to 1992, and is a Stanislaus State alum. Powell also gives back to the community through his work on the Salvation Army Advisory Board, where he has served for close to 20 years.

Turlocker heads effort to fight African illiteracy

In the villages throughout West Africa, school books are hard to come by, and over the past decade, Books and More Education Foundation has sent numerous shipments of books to those in Ghana who need them most. In an effort to both break the area's cycle of poverty and increase the quality of life through education, the foundation is now preparing to ship a massive haul of books out of Turlock and into Nigeria – the culmination of an effort years in the making.
