Hiding the past in plain sight

The other day the forecast near my home included winds up to 50 mph. That's a strong wind, to be sure, but not something I'd write home about. One forecaster I heard, however, presented the news in a shrill voice, as if we might have to stay in the basement all day. I considered calling his station and explaining that, when I was a small child, we walked to school in winds of 50 mph (and back) without a second thought.

Taking it easy

In the past few weeks, he has been a major part of the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team that produced win after win in regular-season play and welcomed a new coach in Larry Reynolds who has a history of making teams into championship contenders. And personally, he was named as his league's best player this week after a solid weekend that saw him average nearly a double-double.

Just another manic Friday

The frantic rush to start shopping for Christmas always catches me a bit unaware. It might be that I'm still sleeping off my turkey and tryptophan hangover on Black Friday each year, but even on the best of days I am in no hurry to battle crowds of sleep-deprived deal hounds.

A new era

Turlock now seems to have entered into a new era. It is one of big city politics with all the earmarks and unwarranted spending that accompanies self-interested politicians. This is ever more apparent with the recent action that the city council has taken. The council has advocated and decided to allow for the misappropriation of Redevelopment Agency funds to remodel the football stadium at Turlock High School. It was an effort headed by Councilman Ted Howze which can be argued to be an attempt by him to score political points leading into his endeavor for re-election next year. He hopes ...

A few degrees makes all the difference

I have a 75 gallon fish tank at home where I have about six tropical fish. When I purchased my fish I tried to get them in pairs. Coincidentally, two of my pairs ended up spawning several times over the summer. Once the cooler weather hit, I noticed several changes occur in the tank. The first change I noticed was the once radiant colors of my fish went pale and their movement became very sluggish. Rarely did any of them feed off the surface of the tank anymore and several even chose to skip meals. All spawning activity also came ...
