102 years young

Evelyn Gawthrop turns 102 on Sunday. She celebrated with cake and ice cream at Paramount Park senior living center on Friday with friends and family. Evelyn was born in 1907 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She moved to California when she was 12 years old. Evelyn attended UCLA and started teaching elementary school in 1928. Her niece, Suzie Corbin, said that Evelyn was Marilyn Monroe's third grade teacher.

James David Allen

Private services will be held for James David Allen. He died at the age of 48 of lung cancer. James loved fishing and did it every chance he got. He fished with all of his family, especially with his nephew Bobby, his brother-in-laws Robert and Keith, and with his sisters and brother. We are so grateful that he is no longer suffering. We all love you JIM.

Our new look

There are always those who obstinately cling to technology of the past. Like that one person in line at the grocery store who whips out their checkbook to pay the bill while the impatient debit card users roll their eyes. Or the final few Americans without a cell phone who don't want to be reached by others 24/7; and, I must admit, the Turlock Journal can also be called technology sluggish. Our current Web site is more reminiscent of 1999 than 2009.
