Phil Short, 73, of Hughson, passed away at Doctors Medical Center with his family by his side. A memorial service was held at Centenary Methodist Church in Modesto.
Gilbert R. Valdez, Sr., 61, entered into rest at 11:50 a.m. at Valley Care Hospital in Pleasanton, Calif. Gilbert was born in San Jose, Calif. and moved to Turlock in December of 2000. He loved gardening and spending time with his nine grandchildren.

A vigil-rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 1, also at Whitehurst, Norton & Dias. A funeral mass will be held at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 2 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Turlock. It will be officiated by Father Luis Navarro. Burial will follow at Turlock Memorial Park.
Visitation for Filomena Aguiar, 79, of Livingston, will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 1 at Whitehurst, Norton & Dias Funeral Service, 286 W. Main St., Turlock. A combined rosary-mass will be held at 9 a.m. Oct. 2 at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church in Livingston. It will be officiated by Father Harvey Fonseca.
Catherine Guzman Robledo, a resident of Newman for 50 years, passed away peacefully at Brandel Manor of Emanuel in Turlock on Sept. 27 surrounded by her loving family and friends at the age of 84.
David Allain passed away at his home in Turlock following complications of multiple sclerosis. Born in Los Angeles to Lawrence and Mary Allain, he graduated from Royal High School in Simi Valley in 1973. He followed in the footsteps of his father's family in construction while taking courses at Moorpark College, and later worked in Yosemite National Park and Hawaii.
Mary Burt, 79, of Turlock passed away Sept. 23 at Emanuel Medical Center. She was born in May 1930 to John and Lillie Vines in Beaver Dam, NC. She lived in New York City from 1950 to 1984, before moving to California. She met Ken Klein while living in San Jose in 1987. They were companions ever since. They moved to Turlock in 1999.
Edward D. Hill, 78, of Merced, passed away at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock on Sept. 24. He was born in Muskogee, Okla. to Lola and Opal Hill. The family moved to the Modesto area when Edward was a young boy. He served in the Army during WW II and became an active member of the Moose Lodge and the VFW. He loved his family, and he also loved to fish and play pool.
Phil Short, 73, of Hughson, passed away at Doctors Medical Center with his family by his side. Phil was born and raised in the Modesto and Hughson area. In 1953, Phil graduated from Hughson High, and moved forward to attend UC Berkeley, where he majored in Engineering and played football for the Golden Bears.
Jeanette I. (Breazeale) Zurilgen passed away at the Hospice House in Hughson after a brief illness. Jeanette was a Modesto native and lived here most of her life. She attended Modesto High School until she married her husband, Albert Zurilgen, and they moved to San Jose. They moved back to Modesto in 1980. She was widowed in 1986, after 30 years of marriage to her husband Bert. She worked for a time at Lee Brothers Stationery in Turlock after being widowed. She tried marriage once again to Theron Gilbert, who also left her a widow after four years of marriage.
Mildred Serpa passed away peacefully on Sept. 23, 2009. She was 92 years old. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 29 at Whitehurst, Norton & Dias Funeral Service in Turlock. A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Sept. 29 at the same location. Mass will start at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 30 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Turlock. Burial will be at Turlock Memorial Park.
Beloved husband, father and grandfather, Rufino Guillen was called to his eternal life on Sept. 22, 2009.
Julia was born in Vermont to Joseph and Mary Spinelli. For 40 years of her life she lived in San Francisco. In 1998, she moved to Modesto, and for the last two years she lived in Turlock. She especially loved to read, watch all of her soaps, TV game shows, and do crossword puzzles. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church of San Francisco.
Gurmeet Atwal, 73, of Livingston passed away on Sept. 24 at Emanuel Medical Center. Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 26 at Allen Mortuary. A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Sept. 27 at Allen Mortuary, with cremation following.
Russell Walston, 76, of Turlock, passed away at Dameron Hospital in Stockton, with his family by his side. A viewing will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 25 at Allen Mortuary. A rosary will follow at 6 p.m.
She is survived by her husband John Storment; children Charlene (Wayne) Fry of Turlock and Cathleen Siler of Delhi; stepchildren Edward Storment and Jennifer Storment, both of Delhi; brother Ed (Alice) Suszynski of June Lake, CA; grandchildren Jaime, Kathryn, Eric, Kayla and Ricardo; great grandchildren Aleigha, Bryson, Ryleigh, Lauryn and Madison.
He is survived by his son Benjamin Hake of Denair; siblings Robert (Vicky) Hake of Denair, Linda (Ted) Pinson of Ohio, Sandra (Allen) Niles of Wyoming; and two grandchildren Marcus and Nicolas Hake of Denair. Doug was preceded in death by his wife Josephine in 2004, his parents Leland and Margaret Hake, and sister Carol Alford.
Launa was born in Hazard County, Kentucky to James and Cassie Begley and passed away at the age of 80 in Turlock, California. She was one of eight children who grew up in a modest home in Kentucky. At the age of twelve, her family moved to Oakland, California. She graduated from Biola University, where she also met her husband Ted Dixon; together they shared 45 years of marriage until he passed away in 2006.
She is survived by her daugters Tamara and Kelin Hritz; adopted daughter Christine Alcantara; brother Ken Feliciano; Godson/nephew Carl Rose; nieces Megan and Kristin Feliciano; nieces/nephews William and Paula Fredson; cousin Kimberly Vally; her best friends Roxanne Grubb, Judi Price and Pamela McGuire, and her dogs Copper, Lucky, Puppy and Maggy.
Jonah Peter Parker, son of Adam and Danae Parker, was born at 10:41 p.m. on Jan. 13, 2015 at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock, CA. He weighed 5 lbs., 4 oz. and was 17.5 inches tall. He spent his short time on Earth in the arms of his loving parents. Jonah passed into the arms of his Heavenly Father just one hour after he was born.
Survived by his children William Cox Thornton III (son), Kelby Thornton (daughter) Tamara Thornton (daughter in law) and Alina Thornton (granddaughter). He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Thornton.

Rinks Atsushi Sano was born on Bacon Island in the Sacramento Delta to Suyehichi and Tsute Sano. He passed away on Friday afternoon at Mercy Medical Center in Merced. His father moved his family to Yerington, Nevada when Rinks was a toddler to work as a sharecropper. After living in Nevada for a few years, the family moved to Livingston to work in farming for the Kishi family. Rinks graduated from Livingston High School in 1940. Warren is survived by his two daughters Cheryl Santos of Newman, CA and Joanie Hall of Torrance, CA, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his second wife Margaret Brown and his son Gary Eugene Brown in 2006, one sister and one brother.
She is survived by her children Roxanne Eaves, Michelle (Jermaine Davis) Howard and Andrew Rochin; father Donald Rochin; siblings Donna Marr, Anthony Rochin and Mark Rochin and six grandchildren Tyler, Jacqueline, D'Mya, Janessa, Jasmine and Darwin. Ann is preceded in death by her mother and sister Janet Barrios.

She is survived by her children: Calvin (Eileen) Olson in Modesto; Kathy (Michael) Rossmann in Grand Junction, CO; Joyce (Mark) Koontz in Richmond, VA; and Dean (Joyce) Olson in Santa Clara; sister Ruth Rupel in LaVerne; ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Fern was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Stanley Olson and four siblings.
