At 6'6", a gentle giant of a man with an even bigger heart, Darryl, 63, slid headfirst and arms outreached into the presence of his loving God late in the evening on Nov. 23. Bob Chance, 86, of Denair passed away at Brandel Manor in Turlock on Tuesday. He was born in Juneau, AK to Pearl Phoebe (Swanson) and Oliver W. Chance in 1924. Shortly thereafter, the Chance family moved to Denair. Bob grew up and spent his entire life in Denair. He attended Denair Grammar and High School. He graduated from Denair High School in 1942. James “Jake” Katsu Kirihara

Jake (James Katsu) Kirihara was born in Turlock and passed on to his eternal rest peacefully at his home in Livingston. Jake proudly served his country - volunteering for the U.S. Army during his family and community's internment in Amache, Colo. - serving in the historically noted 442nd Combat Infantry Group as a Staff Sergeant. Jake farmed and promoted agricultural issues for over six decades. Bachint Kaur Uppal

Bachint Kaur Uppal, 97, of Merced passed away at home, in the comforting arms of her beloved son. Bachint was born in India, and was married at the young age of 13 to her late husband, Swaran Uppal, whom preceded her in death in 2009.

Bachint and Swaran came to live in the U.S. briefly in 1980, only to return to Afghanistan a few years later. She and Swaran returned to the U.S. in 1995, at which time they made the Merced area their home.

Lucas Pacheco Melo

Lucas Melo, 83, of Livingston, passed away on Nov. 27 in Turlock. He was born in 1927 in Guadalupe, Graciosa, Azores. He was a line worker for 22 years and a member of St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church of Livingston and attended Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church of Turlock. He was also a member of Livingston Pentecost Association and founder of the Lira Acoreana de Livingston. He enjoyed gardening, wine making, matance do perco. He loved being with family, loved his grandchildren, playing music and animals.

Richard Allen Root

Richard Allen Root, 89, died September 18, 2014, at Elness Convalescent in Turlock. He was born March 21, 1925, in Los Angeles, California, to Frank and Emma (Berger) Root. At the age of 18 enlisted in the United States Army in the 558th Artillery Battalion. After his Honorable Discharge he settled in Turlock and attended Full Gospel Tabernacle before attending Victory Christian Church in Hilmar. He worked 25 years for Nulaid then retired from Martinez Plywood after 12 years.
