Our beloved Wendy passed away unexpectedly at her home in Turlock on Nov. 2. Wendy Martinez was born in Castro Valley on July 10, 1955 and grew up in Hayward, where she graduated from Mt. Eden High school in 1973. A long time resident of Turlock since 1985, Wendy was an avid animal lover who spent her days as a caregiver of pets for family, friends and local residents. Michael Fernandez, 25, of Keyes, died Nov. 3 in Keyes. He was born in Modesto in 1985. He was a welder for eight years and attended St. Jude Catholic Church of Ceres. He enjoyed skate boarding, video games, "Guitar Hero," football and being outdoors.
Jason Helms (aka "Skin") was born and raised in Massachusetts. He came to California and was "adopted" by Ismael and Constance Coronado at the age of 15. He lived in and around the Turlock area since that time. His life tragically ended while visiting Arizona recently. Jason loved sports, including basketball, football, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed cooking and baking. He was close to his family, and especially loved his kids. He worked as an iron worker in the construction of metal buildings for 12 years and enjoyed his work.
Richard "Dick" Uhrhammer, 90, of Ballico, passed away at Doctors Medical Center on Saturday. He was born to Otto and Alma Uhrhammer in Mountain View, Calif. Richard graduated from Mt. View High School and got his accounting degree at San Jose State, where he was a star basketball player. After graduating from Kings' Point Merchant Marine Academy, he became an officer and served on oil tankers during World War II. Charles M. Harris, 93, died Oct. 18 in Salem, Ore. He was born to Charles A. and Bertha Harris in Denair in 1917. He attended Denair schools, Modesto Jr. College, and UC Berkeley. He worked in mapping for the U.S. Forest Service in Ventura County until 1942, then joined the Navy and served in the Pacific until the end of WW II. He returned to Denair and was involved in farming full-time until he started working in the Stanislaus County Assessor's office in the early 1960s. After retirement he became a licensed farm property appraiser.
Visitation for Mary Sousa Costa will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 12 with recitation of the Rosary to start at 7 p.m., both at Allen Mortuary.
John B. Marsh, 80, died Oct. 25 at his home in Turlock after a long illness. He was born in 1930 in Stranton, Pa. to E. Roy and Helen B. Marsh. He graduated from Dunmore High School in Pennsylvania, attained the rank of Eagle Scout, and then graduated from Syracuse University. He served four years in the United States Navy before moving to California to take classes at Claremont Graduate School.
Iva Parreira Chibante, 73, of Hilmar, died Nov. 3. She was a homemaker for 52 years and a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church of Hilmar, S.P.R.S.I. Council 151 of Stevinson, and P.F.S.A. Council 151 of Hilmar. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and knitting.
Frank Bettencourt Jr., 54, passed away surrounded by family at his home in Kuna, Idaho on Oct. 27 after a two-year battle against prostate cancer.

Frances "Fran" Hirdes passed away peacefully on Friday in Turlock. She was born in Farmersville to Joseph and Mary Riberio in 1928. She was the second of six children: Mary, Fran Ellie, Lee, Joe and Tony. The family later moved to Ceres. Fran attended Ceres High School and graduated in 1947. In 1949, she married Les Hirdes. Together they worked hard in the farming and dairy business for over 40 years. They were married 50 years when Les passed away in 1999; a daughter Leslie preceded Fran in death in 2008. Howard Vincent, 87, of Hughson was born in Ceres. He graduated from high school in Nicolaus and joined the Navy shortly before World War II broke out. After the war he started his dual career of farming and truck driving. He drove for Valchris Turkeys of Turlock. He was a member of the Grange. He was a farmer and gardener, but his real love was for his family.

Lila June Koop is survived by her children Marilyn Esau of Turlock, Harold Koop of Texas, Norma Ingram of New York, and Roger Koop of Turlock; brother Frank; sister Wilma; 10 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Edward Koop, sons John and James Koop, and one grandchild.
Carl was born to Elizabeth and Carl M. Jameson in a small town in OK. The family moved around for a while before settling down in Southern California where he went to school and met his future wife Glenda Inman who lived across the street. They married in 1956. Richard Allen Root, 89, died September 18, 2014, at Elness Convalescent in Turlock. He was born March 21, 1925, in Los Angeles, California, to Frank and Emma (Berger) Root. At the age of 18 enlisted in the United States Army in the 558th Artillery Battalion. After his Honorable Discharge he settled in Turlock and attended Full Gospel Tabernacle before attending Victory Christian Church in Hilmar. He worked 25 years for Nulaid then retired from Martinez Plywood after 12 years.
Steve was welcomed into heaven on September 18, 2014 at age 64. Steve was born in New York to Willard and Gladys Kelly. Steve moved to Southern California when he was one year old and was a current resident of Turlock. Steve graduated from Manteca High School in 1969. He served in the US Navy for 3 years. Steve was a member of Valley Hope Community Church in Turlock. Steve worked for Lowes and The Modesto Bee.
