Berner "Bud" Swanson, 88, passed away Nov. 2 in Minneapolis, Minn. He was a native of Youngstown Colony, Turlock. Bud attended Johnson Joint School through eighth grade and graduated from Turlock High School in 1940.
After serving the Evangelical Covenant Church as an ordained minister, he retired back to Turlock in 1987. In 2001 Bud moved to Covenant Village of Golden Valley in Minnesota.
Our beloved Wendy passed away unexpectedly at her home in Turlock on Nov. 2. Wendy Martinez was born in Castro Valley on July 10, 1955 and grew up in Hayward, where she graduated from Mt. Eden High school in 1973. A long time resident of Turlock since 1985, Wendy was an avid animal lover who spent her days as a caregiver of pets for family, friends and local residents. Wendy loved art, and she loved to paint and draw, and was inspired by nature. She had many lifelong friendships, spanning over decades of her life, and will be sadly missed ...
Michael Fernandez, 25, of Keyes, died Nov. 3 in Keyes. He was born in Modesto in 1985. He was a welder for eight years and attended St. Jude Catholic Church of Ceres. He enjoyed skate boarding, video games, "Guitar Hero," football and being outdoors.
Jason Helms (aka "Skin") was born and raised in Massachusetts. He came to California and was "adopted" by Ismael and Constance Coronado at the age of 15. He lived in and around the Turlock area since that time. His life tragically ended while visiting Arizona recently. Jason loved sports, including basketball, football, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed cooking and baking. He was close to his family, and especially loved his kids. He worked as an iron worker in the construction of metal buildings for 12 years and enjoyed his work.
Richard "Dick" Uhrhammer, 90, of Ballico, passed away at Doctors Medical Center on Saturday. He was born to Otto and Alma Uhrhammer in Mountain View, Calif. Richard graduated from Mt. View High School and got his accounting degree at San Jose State, where he was a star basketball player. After graduating from Kings' Point Merchant Marine Academy, he became an officer and served on oil tankers during World War II. Richard married Lura Beth Magneson; and after the war they moved to Ballico, where they spent the rest of their lives farming. They raised three children and farmed sweet potatoes ...
Charles M. Harris, 93, died Oct. 18 in Salem, Ore. He was born to Charles A. and Bertha Harris in Denair in 1917. He attended Denair schools, Modesto Jr. College, and UC Berkeley. He worked in mapping for the U.S. Forest Service in Ventura County until 1942, then joined the Navy and served in the Pacific until the end of WW II. He returned to Denair and was involved in farming full-time until he started working in the Stanislaus County Assessor's office in the early 1960s. After retirement he became a licensed farm property appraiser.
Austin Cowan, 85, loved BBQ, ragtime tunes, joking around, and reminiscing about working for "Ma Bell." Born in Hope, NM, to Vera and Audi Cowan, he came of age during the Great Depression. A hard working and determined man, he made a career with the Bell Telephone Company helping advance our nation's communication infrastructure. Austin had an adventurous life with many chapters.
Kirk James passed away after a short illness at Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson. He grew up in Delhi, attended schools there and graduated from Livingston High School in 1976. Kirk worked for Norcal Nursery and for the last 2 ½ years worked for Wendell Trinkler Jr.
Alice went home to be with the Lord and Savior on Sept 25, 2014. Alice attended the Neighborhood Church of Redding for 30 years and was an active member of Stephens Ministries. Alice lived a full and happy life; she enjoyed shopping, playing cards, QVC and dancing. She was an avid square dancer for many years. She had many wonderful friends.
Maria M. Nunes, 77, of Turlock, passed away Wednesday, October 8. Also known as Mary, she was born September 23, 1937 to Francicso and Maria Freitas on the island of Terceira in the Azores. She married Jose "Joe" C. Nunes in 1956 and they immigrated to the United States in 1968 with their children, Alfred and George. Mary loved to sew and was an excellent seamstress. She made suits for her husband and sons. When she was able, she would be active in Sacred Heart Church and Our Lady of Assumption in Turlock, but she was most involved with family ...
