Austin Cowan, 85, loved BBQ, ragtime tunes, joking around, and reminiscing about working for "Ma Bell." Born in Hope, NM, to Vera and Audi Cowan, he came of age during the Great Depression. A hard working and determined man, he made a career with the Bell Telephone Company helping advance our nation's communication infrastructure. Austin had an adventurous life with many chapters.
Kirk James passed away after a short illness at Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson. He grew up in Delhi, attended schools there and graduated from Livingston High School in 1976. Kirk worked for Norcal Nursery and for the last 2 ½ years worked for Wendell Trinkler Jr.
Alice went home to be with the Lord and Savior on Sept 25, 2014. Alice attended the Neighborhood Church of Redding for 30 years and was an active member of Stephens Ministries. Alice lived a full and happy life; she enjoyed shopping, playing cards, QVC and dancing. She was an avid square dancer for many years. She had many wonderful friends.
Maria M. Nunes, 77, of Turlock, passed away Wednesday, October 8. Also known as Mary, she was born September 23, 1937 to Francicso and Maria Freitas on the island of Terceira in the Azores. She married Jose "Joe" C. Nunes in 1956 and they immigrated to the United States in 1968 with their children, Alfred and George. Mary loved to sew and was an excellent seamstress. Joseph "Joe" Linhares, 89, of Turlock, died peacefully on Sunday at his home. He was born in Turlock to Antonio and Marie Linhares and spent his entire life here. He attended Tegner School, a one room schoolhouse, and in September of his senior year at Turlock High School he eloped to marry his high school sweetheart, Irma Commons.
Dean West passed away at the age of 79. The youngest of six children, Dean grew up to believe in hard work. He was a good provider and was a very charitable and humble man. He was always reaching into his pocket to help others. In Dean's younger years he was very passionate about horses and had a love for animals throughout his life.
Bruce lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014. He was born and raised in Turlock and attended Turlock schools and graduated from Turlock High School in 1965. An Army Veteran from 1966-1968, he served in Vietnam from 1967-1968. Bruce worked for International Paper/Evergreen for 42 years.
Violet Marie Johnson Wellander, 93, went home to be with the Lord early Sunday morning, September 28th. Her last few hours here were graciously and peacefully spent at her beloved place of residence, Vintage Sonoma.
Lila June Koop is survived by her children Marilyn Esau of Turlock, Harold Koop of Texas, Norma Ingram of New York, and Roger Koop of Turlock; brother Frank; sister Wilma; 10 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Edward Koop, sons John and James Koop, and one grandchild.

Richard Allen Root, 89, died September 18, 2014, at Elness Convalescent in Turlock. He was born March 21, 1925, in Los Angeles, California, to Frank and Emma (Berger) Root. At the age of 18 enlisted in the United States Army in the 558th Artillery Battalion. After his Honorable Discharge he settled in Turlock and attended Full Gospel Tabernacle before attending Victory Christian Church in Hilmar. He worked 25 years for Nulaid then retired from Martinez Plywood after 12 years.

Jay Jensen was born on January 28, 1933, in Luck, Wisconsin, and passed away surrounded by his family on September 17, 2014, in Turlock, California. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, but to many others he was known as the owner of the 7-Eleven on Geer Road in Turlock.
