Ida Lois Haney, 87, passed away June 16 at Memorial Hospital in Modesto. She was born November 1923, in Tennessee to the late John and Ollie Pfluger. She settled in Turlock 51 years ago. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall-Jehovah's Witness in Turlock. She enjoyed gambling in Boomtown, sewing, cooking and gardening.
Corinne Elizabeth Almeida was born June 1 and passed away peacefully on June 22. During her short life of 21 days, she touched many lives and was, and always will be, deeply loved by family and friends. She will be remembered for her strength and gorgeous ocean-blue eyes.
Born in Glenwood, Iowa on Jan. 18, 1931, Dale Edwin Snider died at his home in Roseville on June 12 following complications from a stroke. Dale graduated from Turlock High School in 1948 and attended Modesto Junior College before enlisting in the 82nd Army Airborne Division to serve in the Korean War. Following service he went on to graduate from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He worked for McClellan Airforce Base for 30 years and retired in 1987.
Robert "Bob" Stern was a third generation San Franciscan; his mother and grandmother were survivors of the 1906 earthquake. Robert received his education for electrical engineering during his time in the Army and also at UC Berkeley. He died peacefully at the age of 85 in his home in Oakdale. He was a member of AARP and American Legion.
Teresa Cunningham, 52, of Denair, passed away suddenly in the early morning on Thursday, June 16, 2011. Teri just celebrated her 34th wedding anniversary to husband Galon Cunningham on June 3. She was a loving daughter, mother and grandmother to 10 children and 10 grandchildren.
Glenda Barreto, 71, of Patterson, passed away on Saturday at her home in her much-loved art studio. She was born in Sacramento to Glenn and Anne Fry in 1940. She was raised in Dixon, and moved to Patterson around 1973, where she had a 30-year career as a teacher. Most of those years were spent at Grayson Elementary. James Sweeten, 82, of Turlock, passed away on Saturday, June 18 at Bel-Air Lodge Convalescent Hospital. He was born in Okemah, Okla. to Herman and Winnie Sweeten in 1928. He was raised there until his teens, when the family moved to the Hilmar in 1944. In 1948, he married Mary Ann Davis. James and Mary Ann moved to the Bay Area and lived most of the time in Morgan Hill. He worked for a local trucking company as a truck driver while living there. They settled in Turlock in 1993. Marvin Ernest, 67, of Turlock, passed away at Alexander Cohen Hospice House on Monday. Marvin went home to be with the Lord after a long battle with cancer. Marvin owned and operated AAA Sewing Machine in Modesto for 22 years and was in the business for 45 years. Time with family and riding his Harley were his favorite things. He will be remembered for his gentle manner and deep soft voice. His kindness touched many lives.
Louie Joseph Peters, 91, of Turlock, died on June 12. Louie was born in Pescadero, Calif. to Manuel and Bazelina Peters. He trained for a year as a professional ballroom dancer by the famous Arthur Murray Dance Studio in the 1940s. Latin ballroom dance was Louie's forte. Louie and his wife of 59 years, Alta, were ballroom dancers and members of the Modesto Ballroom and the VFW.
