Our beloved Wendy passed away unexpectedly at her home in Turlock on Nov. 2. Wendy Martinez was born in Castro Valley on July 10, 1955 and grew up in Hayward, where she graduated from Mt. Eden High school in 1973. A long time resident of Turlock since 1985, Wendy was an avid animal lover who spent her days as a caregiver of pets for family, friends and local residents. Michael Fernandez, 25, of Keyes, died Nov. 3 in Keyes. He was born in Modesto in 1985. He was a welder for eight years and attended St. Jude Catholic Church of Ceres. He enjoyed skate boarding, video games, "Guitar Hero," football and being outdoors.
Jason Helms (aka "Skin") was born and raised in Massachusetts. He came to California and was "adopted" by Ismael and Constance Coronado at the age of 15. He lived in and around the Turlock area since that time. His life tragically ended while visiting Arizona recently. Jason loved sports, including basketball, football, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed cooking and baking. He was close to his family, and especially loved his kids. He worked as an iron worker in the construction of metal buildings for 12 years and enjoyed his work.
Richard "Dick" Uhrhammer, 90, of Ballico, passed away at Doctors Medical Center on Saturday. He was born to Otto and Alma Uhrhammer in Mountain View, Calif. Richard graduated from Mt. View High School and got his accounting degree at San Jose State, where he was a star basketball player. After graduating from Kings' Point Merchant Marine Academy, he became an officer and served on oil tankers during World War II. Charles M. Harris, 93, died Oct. 18 in Salem, Ore. He was born to Charles A. and Bertha Harris in Denair in 1917. He attended Denair schools, Modesto Jr. College, and UC Berkeley. He worked in mapping for the U.S. Forest Service in Ventura County until 1942, then joined the Navy and served in the Pacific until the end of WW II. He returned to Denair and was involved in farming full-time until he started working in the Stanislaus County Assessor's office in the early 1960s. After retirement he became a licensed farm property appraiser.
Visitation for Mary Sousa Costa will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 12 with recitation of the Rosary to start at 7 p.m., both at Allen Mortuary.
John B. Marsh, 80, died Oct. 25 at his home in Turlock after a long illness. He was born in 1930 in Stranton, Pa. to E. Roy and Helen B. Marsh. He graduated from Dunmore High School in Pennsylvania, attained the rank of Eagle Scout, and then graduated from Syracuse University. He served four years in the United States Navy before moving to California to take classes at Claremont Graduate School.
Iva Parreira Chibante, 73, of Hilmar, died Nov. 3. She was a homemaker for 52 years and a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church of Hilmar, S.P.R.S.I. Council 151 of Stevinson, and P.F.S.A. Council 151 of Hilmar. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and knitting.
Frank Bettencourt Jr., 54, passed away surrounded by family at his home in Kuna, Idaho on Oct. 27 after a two-year battle against prostate cancer.

Frances "Fran" Hirdes passed away peacefully on Friday in Turlock. She was born in Farmersville to Joseph and Mary Riberio in 1928. She was the second of six children: Mary, Fran Ellie, Lee, Joe and Tony. The family later moved to Ceres. Fran attended Ceres High School and graduated in 1947. In 1949, she married Les Hirdes. Together they worked hard in the farming and dairy business for over 40 years. They were married 50 years when Les passed away in 1999; a daughter Leslie preceded Fran in death in 2008. Howard Vincent, 87, of Hughson was born in Ceres. He graduated from high school in Nicolaus and joined the Navy shortly before World War II broke out. After the war he started his dual career of farming and truck driving. He drove for Valchris Turkeys of Turlock. He was a member of the Grange. He was a farmer and gardener, but his real love was for his family.

Marilyn Davenport passed away peacefully in Turlock on July 31st after a brave battle with lung disease. She was born and raised in Minneapolis, MN, then moved to California in 1950 upon marrying Henry Morrett and earning her nursing degree. She worked in hospitals for 19 years and another 10 years as an aerospace industry nurse in southern California. She highly valued her work as an ER nursing supervisor and enjoyed the variety of patients she served. Julia was born in Chicago, IL to Samuel and Nanajon Yohannan and passed away in Turlock at the age of 85. She settled in Turlock at the age of fifteen and graduated from Turlock High School. In 1957 she married Brad Sleeper and they shared 57 years of marriage. Julia was passionate about her Assyrian community and actively involved in and treasurer for the Assyrian American Civic Club of Turlock. One of her favorite activities was playing "Takhta", backgammon. She also loved to read and play bridge.

Dorothy Wire Ross was called home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 6, 2014 just weeks shy of her 102nd birthday. Dorothy was born in Chino, CA to Charles and Jo (Passmore) Wire. She attended high school in Chino and Chaffey College in Ontario before marrying Harlon Clyde Ross in 1932. Edward was born in Turlock where he lived all his life. He graduated from Turlock High School and drove truck for over 30 years. Ed enjoyed fishing, watching NASCAR and getting together with friends. He loved his daughters and one grandson dearly.
