Filomena Alves Mendes, 92, of Modesto passed away on Jan. 5, 2011, in Modesto.
She was born on April 29, 1918 in Santa Barbara, Terceira, Azores. She was a homemaker for 47 years and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Modesto and Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church of Turlock. She enjoyed embroidery, singing and spending time with family and friends.

Arthur Eugene Gilstrap

Arthur Eugene Gilstrap, 90, of Turlock died Jan. 4, 2011, at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock. Mr. Gilstrap was born August 1920, in Oklahoma, to the late John and Lula Gilstrap. He came to Marysville, Calif. at the age of 16 during the Depression. He was an operating engineer for 50 years. He settled in Turlock 10 years ago. He was an avid fisherman.
He is survived by his two sons, John Gilstrap of Turlock and Gerald Gilstrap of Parker, Colo.; three grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and sister, Verna Story of Roseville.

Richard Stephen Lear

Richard Lear was born to Duke and Delphine Lear in Pascagoula, Miss. The 11th of 12 children, Richard learned early about the value of hard work and the meaning of family which served him well through his life. Richard loved and served his country faithfully in the U.S. Army. After returning to Mississippi at the end of his service, Richard took a job as a carpenter and remained in that trade for 20 years.

Wilfred "Fritz" Marson, 94, of Turlock passed away on Sunday, Jan. 2 at home with his family at his side. He was born in Shickley, Neb. to John and Mary Marson in 1916. In the late 40s, Wilfred moved to Turlock and lived here since then. He met Caroline Brown in the Sacred Heart choir, and they married in 1959. Christopher Bell, 80, of Turlock passed away at Emanuel Medical Center on Saturday, Jan. 1. He was born in Shanghai, China to Joseph and Nellie Bell in 1930. During WW II, Chris' family was captured in Shanghai and put in an internment camp. When Chris was 12, his family was brought to Detroit, Mich. through a POW exchange program. Vivian Raineri, 86, of Modesto, passed away at Hy-Lond Convalescent Hospital in Modesto. She was born in Roseburg, Ore. to Henry and Muriel McGuckin. The family moved to Napa, where Vivian completed her schooling and began her career as a journalist and author. She wrote for the Bay Area Bureau of the Peoples' World Newspaper. She was politically astute and active with the Women for Peace in Berkeley, where she lived most of her life. Vivian authored the book "The Red Angel," a biography of Elaine Yoneda, a lady who served time in an internment camp during World War II.

Rodney Dean "Rod" Geving, 61, Dickinson, died Thursday, October 23, 2014 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn., after losing his battle with cancer. Services for Rodney will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 1, 2014 at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, New England, with Rev. Bruce Peterson officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Rainy Butte Cemetery, south of New England. Military honors will be provided by the New England American Legion Anton Ulijohn Post 66.
