Raymond E. Koogler

Born in Staunton, Va., Ray moved to Chagrin Falls, Ohio as a young boy. From 1942 to 1945, he served in the Army, primarily in Europe and the Mediterranean. In 1945, after being discharged, Ray married Mildred Kivisto. In 1949, he enlisted in the Air Force and served in Korea until 1952. After 38 years of service to the White Motor Company in Cleveland, he and Mildred retired to Hilmar. Ray had a passion for flying and was an accomplished pilot. He also built and flew his own airplane. Throughout his life, Ray enjoyed woodworking, cabinet making and electronics.

Phil Stadtler

Phil was born in Oakland. He and his parents moved to San Antone Valley to a 640 acre homestead where they raised cattle. In 1928 they moved to a 510 acre ranch in Hilmar, and he lived there the rest of his life. Phil attended Hilmar Schools and helped his father with the family dairy. In 1938 he borrowed $240 to trade cattle with and by the 1950's he was one of the biggest cattle traders on the Mexican border, importing as many as 250,000 head per year. Josephine Avila, 102, of Turlock, passed away at Emanuel Medical Center on Saturday, March 12. Josephine was born in Rayon, Sonora, Mexico to Andres and Guadalupe Villa in 1908. In the earlier 1930s, she moved to Brawley, Calif. and lived in Turlock since 1947. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, YLI and the Altar Society. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and crocheting. God and family were her life.

Joseph Makita, 85, of Delhi, was born on April 20, 1925, in Cressey and passed away on March 11 in Delhi.
He was an auto mechanic for 63 years and Dow Hammond was his last employer. He was one of Jehovah Witnesses in Delhi. He enjoyed taking pictures, gardening and spending time with family and friends.

Katherine Tarone, 90, passed away at her home in Capitola. She was born to Albert and Clara Coker in Stevinson and grew up in Stevinson, where her mother, "Trixie," served as the postmistress. She graduated from Hilmar High School and married Natale Tarone in 1931. She kept their home while her husband went off to serve in World War II. She worked for 18 years as a ticket agent for the local Greyhound Bus depot. She also managed apartments both here and in the Santa Cruz area. Felipe Maldonado, 44, of Turlock passed away at home on Sunday, Feb. 26. He was born in Redwood City to Clementa and Nora Maldonado in 1966. In 1978, his family moved to Turlock, and he graduated from Turlock High School in 1985. He worked for Tri-Valley Growers. He enjoyed woodworking, building things and gardening.
Felipe is survived by siblings, Randy Beers of Woodland, Richard Beers of Turlock, Robert Beers of New Jersey and Jackie Durant of San Jose. He was preceded in death by both of his parents.
