County libraries hope to set reading record

This childhood icon has been munching his way through fruit, salami, a cupcake, and other goodies since the book was first published in 1969. CSU Stanislaus hears lessons on homelessness

A little over two years ago it became clear that the homeless population of Portugal's largest city, Lisbon, was increasing at a rapid rate. Half a world away, here in Stanislaus County, the City of Turlock is seeking a solution to the same problem in the wake of the 2008 closure of the Emergency Cold Weather Homeless Shelter.

Around Town

Over 200 volunteers participated in the 2009 Turlock Shines clean-up day on Saturday. They picked up trash along roadways and were also dispatched to the homes of Turlock senior citizens to help with yard work and minor outside repairs.

Giving back

The Turlock Police Department presented Katie Soares a certificate of appreciation for her donation of teddy bears for officers to give children who are in bad situations. Soares is an avid volunteer and enjoys making the community a better place.

Making the best better

The Sacred Heart 4-H club worked on a window display featuring what 4-H is all about on Thursday. The window, located in front of the Endsley and Associates office on East Main Street, is part of National 4-H Week where clubs all over the country create window displays to "Celebrate 4-H."
