The Turlock Police Department Homeless Engagement Multi-Disciplinary Team hosted a Community Outreach Fair on Tuesday at the City Hall parking lot. A number of organizations and support groups offered information on resources available in the community.

Swedish family celebrates 100 years in Turlock

It was Sept. 28, 1917 when eight-year-old Ellen Johanson stepped off the train at the Southern Pacific Railroad station in Turlock with her Swedish family, giving up everything they owned to come to the still-primitive city. In 2017, the Turlock residents that exist today as a result of that brave journey celebrated their family legacy that has flourished in the city for a century, and is still known today thanks to one family member who decided to write everything down.

Giant human pink hard hat ribbon creates visual call to action

Pink ribbons are a common sight leading into October, as communities aim to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On Wednesday, however, EMCOR/Shambaugh & Son, L.P. went above and beyond to make breast cancer screening a topic of discussion for everyone when the contractor gathered over 440 people donning signature pink hard hats for an oversized, human display of a pink ribbon.

Know Your Neighbor: Vanessa Guthrie

Twenty-five-year-old Vanessa Guthrie has only lived in Turlock for two years, but already, she has made the city her home. She and her husband Zachary Osborne moved to the Central Valley in 2015 after getting married, and haven't looked back since. The fitness enthusiast opened her own gym, GOH Fitness, in April, where she supports community members on their journeys to look and feel their best with professional help and guidance every step of the way.

Firefighters paint the town pink

The firefighters will be wearing and selling specially designed pink T-shirts in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month throughout the month of October. All the funds go to the Bill & Elsie Ahlem Cancer Endowment. Shirts will be available for purchase at the gift shop at Emanuel Medical Center. Last year's efforts brought in more than $20,000 for the endowment and over the years the fundraising campaign has netted more than $80,000 in funds.

Vista off to rocky start with neighbors

In May, Turlock resident John Snoke stood before the Turlock Planning Commission to voice concerns he and other community members had about construction of the student apartment complex, The Vista, in their neighborhood. In the 42 days since students moved into the complex, a litany of calls to the Turlock Police Department have substantiated those concerns.

Know Your Neighbor: Ali Cox

Allison Cox captured Turlock's heart when she was part of the U.S. Rowing team that won a silver medal in the 2004 summer Olympics. Since then, she has turned her experience in big city marketing firms to help the businesses and organizations in her hometown through her company, Ali Cox & Company Marketing. Cox also was fundamental in launching the HeyTurlock! Platform to help the community promote local events.
