Turlock pays tribute to veterans of all generations

Turlock is a patriotic town, and that patriotism is displayed by sights like the 20 banners flying over Countryside Drive, which honor citizens currently serving our country, and the 1,072 American flags registered at residences around the city as part of Mayor Gary Soiseth's 1,000 Flags Initiative. That being said, it's no surprise that Friday's annual Veterans Day Ceremony at Central Park was a grand affair, honoring Turlock's heroes that have served in the country's armed forces.

Know Your Neighbor: Ray Mendonca

Turlock High School football fans may recognize longtime announcer Ray Mendonca's voice, which echoes throughout Joe Debely Stadium on Friday nights, but now, readers can get to know the man behind the microphone. A lifelong Turlock resident, Mendonca's grandfather moved to the city during the great depression and purchased the family farm. Today, the avid Oakland Athletics, Raiders and Golden State Warriors fan serves as Water Operations Manager for Turlock Irrigation District.

To mitigate the negative effects of burning in Valley communities, every winter the Air District issues a daily wood-burning status by county.
