Gas line break prompts evacuation in Turlock

A construction company working on installing water lines accidentally hit a gas pipe, prompting an evacuation of a Turlock neighborhood.

Joey Machado was sworn in as Turlock Police Lieutenant by City Clerk Kellie Weaver while Police Chief Robert Jackson looks on during a promotion ceremony on Tuesday. Mercado's career in law enforcement began in 1994, including 18 years with the Turlock Police Department. He has served as a Rape Aggression Defense instructor, a member of SWAT, and a K-9 handler. He also was responsible for establishing the Habitual Transient Offender program in Turlock, which aims to stop the cycle of jail and release by diverting people into the social services programs they need.

Neighbors unite in National Night Out

There were plenty of reasons to draw Turlock residents out of the comforts of their homes Tuesday night and mingle with the neighbors: the aroma of burgers on the barbecue; the fizz of a freshly poured rootbeer float; the unexpected though gratefully accepted cool breeze. But most of all it was to make a statement that these neighborhoods would not be easy picking for any criminals.

The Turlock Irrigation District contributed to the ongoing cleanup efforts of river enthusiasts and Stanislaus County residents known as "Operation 9-2-99" on Friday to remove over two tons of trash from the Tuolumne River and surrounding habitats.

Love Kitchen comes to Turlock

Little Caesars Love Kitchen, a big rig pizza kitchen on wheels, has traveled across the United States and Canada since 1985, feeding victims of natural disasters and the homeless. On Monday, the Love Kitchen made a stop at the Turlock Gospel Mission's Homeless Assistance Ministry on First Street. Close to 75 men, women and children participated in the goodwill pizza party on Monday.

Longtime Turlock optometrist passes torch to next generation of practitioners

On the northwest corner of Colorado Avenue and Arbor Way sits two pieces of Turlock history. The most obvious to passersby is the towering coastal redwood tree, planted on that spot in 1927 by Mary Ellen Niel, a beloved piano teacher. Nestled under the ancient tree, however, is an unassuming thatched-roof building that has been the office of Dr. Robert Johns, O.D. for the past 35 years.

Fires pose health concern Valley-wide

Two wildfires, Willow Fire in Madera County and Cabin Fire in Tulare County, have prompted local air officials to issue a health cautionary statement for smoke impacts throughout the eight-county air basin: San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Kings, Tulare and the Valley portion of Kern counties. Currently smoke impacts are concentrated in the mountainous and foothill areas of the air basin, but impacts on the Valley floor are possible until the fires are extinguished.

Hope Lives Here Kick-off

Former Fresno State and NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer and Turlock Gospel Mission's Executive Director Tim Guerino greet one another before the Hope Lives Here kick-off celebration. The fundraising campaign to help complete Phase II of the Turlock Gospel Mission's year-round homeless shelter. Dilfer, who played in the NFL for 13 years, was in town to help the campaign and share his story of faith.
