Families affected by current immigration laws, farm workers and community leaders are set to march on Sunday in a continuing effort to urge lawmakers to pass a new immigration process that would allow the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S.to legalize their status.
Turlock native Sabrina Vann made her community proud by receiving second place in the annual Wella Student Competition in the 2013 America's Beauty Show in Chicago. Vann was one of 24 finalists who competed in the "Sebastian Professionals" category.
Over a thousand contestants, from as far as Hong Kong to as local as Turlock, have signed up to strut their stuff this weekend at the annual Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon. The event consists of a 5K run, and a half and full marathon. One applicant in particular is looking to fulfill her dreams of finishing her first full marathon.
Local military veterans seeking health examinations, benefit consultations or referrals, won't have to travel far this month. Opportunities for military veterans to meet with the VA Mobile Medical Outreach Clinic team will begin next week as part of collaboration with the Turlock VFW Post 5059.
The Turlock Fire Department responded to a total of 451 incidents during the month of February. These included a total of 289 emergency medical service calls. Turlock Fire responded to 21 motor vehicle accidents, and 16 commercial/residential fire alarms. There were a total of 29 fire type calls: 10 building fires, 3 vehicle fires, 3 fires in motor home/campers, 1 arcing shorted electrical, 4 unauthorized burnings, 6 Dumpster fires, 1 chimney or flue fire, and 1 excessive heat burn. Tourism is growing in Turlock and the money it brings into town is becoming a strong economic driver for the city, according to the recently released annual report from the Turlock Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The Carlos Vieira Foundation expanded its grant program to help families with autism into two more counties. Families that are in the counties of Mariposa and Tuolumne will now be eligible to apply for a grant up to $500 through the foundation that provides an item or service that directly helps their child with autism.
