A world of goodwill

Mundo's Latin Grill and the Central Valley Project held a toy and jacket givaway at Mundo's on Saturday. They gave out 197 jackets to Turlock children who signed up ahead of time. They also gave away toys and bags of candy and cookies as Christmas gifts for the kids.

Students sew holiday smiles

Twenty-eight little girls will have something more to smile about other than a visit from Santa come this holiday. The Pitman High home economics class made brand new Christmas dresses and donated them to the Salvation Army to be distributed to families in need. Every year, the Kiwanis Club of Turlock buys material to give to the Pitman home economics class to sew together dresses that are then donated during Christmas and Easter.

Air deputies brighten holiday of children in crisis

Squeals of delight shot up Thursday afternoon when a bussed-in crowd of children from the Children's Crisis Center first spotted Santa Claus waving exuberantly from the top of an approaching black SWAT truck. The jolly Santa hopped out with a big toy sack slung over his shoulder to greet the giggly and wiggly group of 70 and led them into the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department headquarters in Ceres for a memorable visit and presentation of gifts.

TID changes requirements for solar power incentives

With only 88 residential units and nine non-residential units participating in the Turlock Irrigation District's Solar Incentive Program, the TID Board of Directors approved some changes to the program at Tuesday's meeting.

Grocery employee receives a rewarding surprise

Christina VanDyle won a $10,000 lottery prize on Tuesday. Not the California Lottery, but the Save Mart Customer Connection Cash Giveaway. VanDyle was one of 10 Save Mart employees across Northern California who won the prize for excellent customer service. Her name was randomly drawn from 63,000 entrants who all performed well on quarterly mystery shopper visits. The winner was revealed by Save Mart CEO Bob Piccinini (pictured above, right) during his annual visit to the store.

Santa makes a few special visits

"Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas!" echoed throughout the halls of the Elness Convalescent Hospital on Thursday when the Kiwanis Club of Turlock crew including Santa (Ken Hood) and his elves (Donna Oppelt, Lois Pinkney and Verna and Warren Riopel) passed out presents. The Kiwanis Club of Turlock delivered a total of 537 hand-knitted pairs of slippers to residents in long-term care facilities throughout Turlock.

Dads make time for crafts

Over 300 people filled the halls of Wakefield Elementary School Friday to participate in the "Daddy and Me" holiday workshop. There were more than 15 activities for the fathers and their children to participate in ranging from taking pictures with Santa to making their own ornaments. The workshop lasted for two hours, ending in a dinner for all that attended.
